Chapter 10: The Truth Sarah Buried
For several minutes after the call ended, neither Emily nor I spoke.
The room felt smaller.
The silence felt heavier.
Because everything we believed about the past had just been turned upside down.
Ryan wasn’t the man who simply walked away.
Sarah wasn’t just the woman who was abandoned.
And I wasn’t the only person who had been lied to.
Emily looked at me.
“Do you think Mom was wrong?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
That was the hardest answer I had ever given her.
Because Sarah was the person I trusted most in the world.
But the truth didn’t care about what I wanted to believe.
It only cared about what happened.
We drove to meet Karen Mills that afternoon.
She was waiting at a small coffee shop outside the city.
When we arrived, she immediately stood.
Her eyes moved from me to Emily.
“You look exactly like your mother.””
Emily’s expression softened.
“She talked about me?””
Karen smiled sadly.
“She talked about you every day.””
We sat down.
Karen placed a thick envelope on the table.
“This is what Sarah wanted you to have.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to me years ago?””
Karen looked down.
“Because Sarah told me not to.””
Emily frowned.
“She told you not to?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Karen took a deep breath.
“Because she was afraid.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of old legal documents.
The first page was a custody agreement.
The second was a police report.
The third was something that made Emily stop breathing.
A restraining order.
Against Ryan.
Emily looked at me.
“What is this?””
I read the date.
Ten years ago.
The same year Ryan disappeared.
Karen spoke quietly.
“Your mother never told you the whole story.””
I looked up.
“What happened?””
Karen folded her hands.
“Ryan didn’t leave because he didn’t care.””
Emily looked hurt.
“Then why?””
Karen looked at her.
“Because Sarah found out Ryan had been taking money from accounts that belonged to you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Emily’s money?””
Karen nodded.
“He was trying to access money your grandparents left you.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
“I know it’s difficult.””
“No,” Emily whispered.
“I mean… he told me Daniel stole my money.””
The irony was painful.
The man who accused me of stealing had been accused of stealing first.
Karen continued.
“Sarah confronted him.””
“What happened?””
“He became angry.””
The word sounded too small.
“Angry how?””
Karen hesitated.
“He threatened to take Emily away.””
The room went silent.
Emily looked down.
“Mom never told me.””
“She wanted to protect you.””
I looked at the documents again.
“So Sarah forced him out?””
Karen nodded.
“She filed for protection.””
Emily’s eyes filled.
“She made me think he abandoned me.””
“She thought you were too young to understand.””
I closed my eyes.
Because suddenly I remembered.
Emily was eight.
A child.
A child caught between two adults.
Sarah had made a choice.
Maybe not a perfect one.
But a choice she believed would protect her daughter.
Then Karen handed me another document.
“This is the part you need to see.””
I unfolded it.
My hands froze.
It was a DNA test.
Emily looked confused.
“What is that?””
I looked at Karen.
“Why do you have this?””
Karen’s expression became serious.
“Because Sarah ordered it before she died.””
Emily’s face changed.
“Why?””
Karen looked at her.
“Because Ryan had been questioning something.””
I stared at the paper.
The results were sealed.
I didn’t want to open it.
Because suddenly I was afraid.
Afraid of another truth.
Afraid that everything I knew about being Emily’s father could disappear.
Emily reached for my hand.
“Open it.””
I looked at her.
She nodded.
“Whatever it says… we need to know.””
I opened the envelope.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
My hands began to shake.
Emily looked at my face.
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because the result wasn’t about Ryan.
It wasn’t about me.
It was about a secret Sarah had carried for ten years.
A secret that explained why she never let Ryan come back.
The final line stared back at me.
“Biological relationship: excluded.””
Emily whispered:
“Dad…”
I looked up.
And for the first time in ten years, I didn’t know what to say.
Because Ryan wasn’t her biological father.
May you like
And somehow…
Sarah had known all along.
