Chapter 14: Sarah’s Last Evidence
We watched the video again.
And again.
Every time, the same feeling grew stronger.
Betrayal.
The person sitting across from Sarah wasn’t Ryan.
It wasn’t Dr. Bennett.
It was someone closer.
Someone Sarah never expected to hurt her.
Emily whispered the name.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You know who it is?””
She nodded slowly.
Her face filled with disbelief.
“That’s impossible.””
The voice on the recording belonged to my attorney.
The man who had helped me uncover the fake signatures.
The man who had guided us through every step.
The man who claimed he wanted justice.
Emily stood up.
“He helped us.””
I shook my head.
“Or he wanted us to think he did.””
We watched the rest of the video.
Sarah looked terrified.
“You promised you would protect Emily.””
My attorney’s voice answered.
“I am protecting her.””
“No,” Sarah said.
“You’re protecting yourself.””
The recording cut out.
Emily looked at me.
“What does this mean?””
“It means we have been following someone else’s plan.””
My phone rang.
Speaking of him.
My attorney.
I looked at the screen.
Emily whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
But I did.
“Daniel.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“We need to talk.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“Because you found the video.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You were watching us.””
“I was trying to prevent mistakes.””
“You manipulated us.””
“Daniel, you don’t understand what Sarah was involved in.””
I looked at Emily.
“What was she involved in?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Your wife discovered the truth about Emily’s birth.””
My grip tightened.
“What truth?””
“She wasn’t supposed to know.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Who am I?””
The line went quiet.
Then my attorney said:
“Emily, your mother spent years protecting you from the wrong people.””
“Who are the wrong people?””
His voice lowered.
“The people who would do anything to control your inheritance.””
I almost laughed.
“Still about money?””
“No.””
He sounded serious.
“It’s about power.””
The call ended.
Emily looked at me.
“What do we do?””
I looked at the files.
At Sarah’s face on the screen.
At the woman who trusted me to protect her daughter.
“We finish what your mother started.””
That night, we met Karen again.
She brought one final envelope.
“Sarah left this with me the day before she died.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not to me.
To Emily.
Emily’s hands shook as she read.
My beautiful daughter,
If you are reading this, it means the truth finally reached you.
I am sorry I couldn’t tell you everything.
I was afraid the people around us would use you to get what they wanted.
But there is one thing I need you to know.
Daniel was never just the man who married your mother.
He was your father long before any paper could prove it.
Emily began crying.
Then she turned the page.
The final paragraph was different.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“What does it say?””
She slowly lowered the letter.
“Mom wrote that the person who changed my birth records…”
May you like
She looked terrified.
“Was someone in our family.””
