Chapter 12: The Name On The Birth Record

Emily stared at the paper.

I watched the color disappear from her face.

“What is this?””

Her voice was barely audible.

Ryan leaned back.

“The truth.””

I reached for the document.

But Emily pulled it away.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I need to see this.””

I nodded.

She kept reading.

Then she whispered:

“This can’t be real.””

The birth record showed something impossible.

Ryan’s name had been listed as the father.

But another document attached to it showed that the record had been changed.

Years ago.

Before Emily was born.

Someone had removed a name.

Someone had replaced it.

Karen’s words came back to me.

Sarah knew the truth.

She had carried it alone.

“Who is this?”” Emily asked.

Her finger pointed to the original name.

I looked.

And froze.

Because the name belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had been around our family.

Someone who had helped Sarah during her pregnancy.

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel?””

I couldn’t speak.

Ryan smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I stood.

“What did you do?””

Ryan laughed.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then why do you have this?””

“Because I wanted Emily to know who everyone really is.””

I grabbed the folder.

“You have been planning this for years.””

His expression changed.

“Years?””

He stepped closer.

“You think I’m the only person who kept secrets?””

Emily looked between us.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at the document again.

The name.

The date.

The signatures.

Something was wrong.

Ryan wanted us to believe this.

But why?

Then I noticed something.

The document wasn’t from Sarah.

It was from a private records office.

And the signature approving the change…

Was not Sarah’s.

It was Ryan’s.

I looked up.

“You forged this.””

His smile disappeared.

“What?””

“You changed the record.””

He became defensive.

“You can’t prove that.””

Emily looked at him.

“Why would you have a document that destroys your own claim?””

Ryan said nothing.

That silence told us everything.

I took the folder.

“You didn’t come back for me.””

Ryan stared.

“You came back because you were afraid someone would find out.””

His jaw tightened.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful man.

And more like someone cornered.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” Emily asked.

He ignored her.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

I couldn’t hear the words.

But Ryan’s expression became terrified.

“No.””

A pause.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

Emily stepped closer.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””

Ryan ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

And whispered:

“You have no idea what your wife uncovered before she died.””

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Ryan backed away.

“Sarah wasn’t trying to protect Emily from me.””

He looked at Emily.

“She was trying to protect her from someone else.””

The room went cold.

“Who?””

Ryan looked toward the door.

Then said the name.

A name that made Emily gasp.

Because it was someone we had trusted.

Someone who had been helping us uncover the truth.

Someone who had been beside us the entire time.

And before Ryan left, he said one final thing:

“Ask your father why Sarah was afraid of him.””
