Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Told Her About
Emily stared at the phone in Ryan’s hand.
The expression on her face hurt more than the words she had spoken.
It wasn’t anger.
It was disappointment.
Like she had already decided I was guilty.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“What is that?””
I looked at Ryan.
“What are you doing?””
Ryan shrugged.
“Helping her understand the truth.””
I almost laughed.
The truth.
That word coming from him felt impossible.
“You disappeared for ten years,” I said quietly.
“And you come back today pretending you know everything?””
His smile faded slightly.
“I came back because Emily deserved to know what happened.””
Emily looked between us.
“Someone please explain.””
I took a breath.
“I don’t know what he showed you, but there is nothing I hid from you.””
Ryan turned his phone toward her.
“Your mother left money for your future after she passed.””
Emily’s face changed.
She looked at me.
“What?””
I felt my stomach drop.
Because I knew exactly what he was talking about.
But I also knew the truth.
“Emily, your mother’s money was placed into an account years ago.””
“Then why does he have your name on the statement?””
Ryan interrupted.
“Because the account was transferred.””
A few people nearby were still watching.
Some whispered.
Some recorded.
I hated that this moment was becoming entertainment.
I stepped closer to Emily.
“Listen to me.””
She stepped back.
That hurt.
More than anything else.
“Did you use my money?””
The question came out softly.
But it destroyed me.
“No.””
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“Emily, I know it’s hard to accept.””
I turned toward him.
“Stop.””
He ignored me.
“Your mother trusted him.””
Emily looked down.
“My mom trusted you too.””
The way she said it made me feel like I was already a stranger.
I remembered Sarah.
Her illness.
Her last weeks.
The nights we sat together in the hospital while Emily slept in the chair beside us.
Sarah had grabbed my hand before she died.
“Promise me something.””
I had cried.
“Anything.””
“Promise you’ll protect her.””
I promised.
And I meant it.
After Sarah passed, there were legal issues everywhere.
Bills.
Insurance.
Paperwork.
The college account Sarah created had complications because of how it was structured.
I spent months fixing everything.
But I never touched Emily’s money.
Not once.
“Emily,” I said.
“Your mother wanted that money saved for school. I would never take it.””
Ryan crossed his arms.
“Then explain why the account has withdrawals.””
Emily looked at me.
I felt something inside me crack.
“Withdrawals?””
Ryan nodded.
“Ask him where the money went.””
I pulled out my phone.
“I can show you every document.””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t want excuses.””
That sentence hurt because she sounded exactly like someone who had rehearsed it.
Someone had been preparing her for this.
I looked at Ryan.
He avoided my eyes for half a second.
Just half a second.
But I noticed.
I always noticed things about Emily.
And suddenly I noticed things about him too.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Ryan frowned.
“What?””
“Why tell her today?””
The graduation.
The cameras.
The crowd.
The perfect moment to make me look like a villain.
Ryan smiled.
“Because she’s old enough to know.””
“No,” I said.
“Because you wanted her to see me as the enemy.””
Emily looked away.
“Stop fighting.””
I lowered my voice.
“I’m not fighting. I’m trying to understand why my daughter thinks I betrayed her.””
The word daughter made her expression tighten.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I think I need time away from you.””
I stood there silently.
The flowers were still in my hand.
The same flowers I had protected for three hours.
The same flowers she refused.
“I hope you find the truth,” I whispered.
Then I walked away.
I didn’t drive home immediately.
I sat in my truck outside the university for almost an hour.
I couldn’t cry.
I couldn’t get angry.
I just stared at the passenger seat where the empty ribbon from the bouquet had fallen.
My phone rang.
It was my attorney.
I almost didn’t answer.
“Daniel?””
“Yeah.””
“Where are you?””
“At Emily’s graduation.””
There was silence.
Then his voice changed.
“Did Ryan contact you?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?””
“Daniel, I just reviewed the documents you sent me last month.””
I sat up.
“What documents?””
“The transfer records.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What about them?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Daniel, the signature on that withdrawal request…”
I gripped the steering wheel.
May you like
“What?””
“It isn’t yours.””
