Chapter 8: The Truth Behind His Disappearance

We searched everywhere for the missing page.

The envelope.

The folder.

The office.

Nothing.

It was gone.

Someone had removed the one piece of information Sarah wanted us to see most.

Emily sat in the hospital parking lot staring out the window.

“My whole life feels fake.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She wiped her eyes.

“I spent years thinking you were the person who replaced my real dad.””

Her voice cracked.

“But what if he was the person who abandoned me?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew how much pain came with that realization.

Ryan had spent days convincing her I was the fake father.

Now she was starting to question whether he was the fake person.

“We need to find out why he left,” I said.

Emily nodded.

“Where do we start?””

I remembered something.

A box.

Sarah’s old belongings.

After she died, I stored everything in the attic.

Letters.

Photos.

Documents.

Things I couldn’t throw away.

We drove home.

For the first time in days, Emily walked beside me instead of behind me.

That small thing meant everything.

In the attic, we opened Sarah’s boxes.

Dust covered everything.

Emily found old pictures.

Her first birthday.

Her first day of school.

The day she learned to ride a bike.

She smiled sadly.

“You took so many pictures.””

“I didn’t want to forget anything.””

She looked at me.

“I think I forgot.””

I looked away.

Because hearing that hurt.

Then Emily found a small black notebook.

“What’s this?””

I recognized it immediately.

Sarah’s journal.

She never let anyone read it.

But now…

I opened the first page.

Most entries were about normal things.

Bills.

Work.

Emily.

Then we found the last year.

The year Ryan came back.

Sarah wrote:

“Ryan contacted me today.””

Emily froze.

“Mom knew?””

I kept reading.

“He says he wants to reconnect with Emily. But I don’t believe him.””

The next entry was worse.

“He asked about the trust.””

Then another.

“He threatened to tell Emily lies about Daniel.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“He threatened her?””

I nodded.

Sarah had written everything.

The arguments.

The phone calls.

The pressure.

Then we reached the final entry.

The ink was shaky.

“Ryan knows Daniel is not Emily’s biological father, but he does not know the full truth.””

Emily looked at me.

“What truth?””

I turned the page.

The next words stopped me.

“Daniel has always been Emily’s father in every way that matters. But the reason Ryan left was because…”

The sentence ended.

Again.

Another missing piece.

Someone had torn the page out.

Emily stood up.

“This can’t be a coincidence.””

“No.””

“Someone keeps removing the truth.””

I nodded.

And then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

Attached was a video.

I opened it.

It was recorded in the hospital.

Sarah was sitting in bed.

Alive.

Weak.

And Ryan was standing beside her.

The video started with Ryan saying:

“You need to sign this, Sarah.””

Emily and I watched in silence.

Sarah looked scared.

“No.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“You don’t have a choice.””

The video ended.

Emily looked at me.

“He forced her.””

But there was something else.

Something hidden in the corner of the video.

A reflection in the hospital window.

Someone else was there.

Watching.

I paused the frame.

Then zoomed in.

Emily leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

I stared at the reflection.

Because I recognized the person.

It was someone who had been pretending to help us.

May you like

Someone who had been asking questions from the beginning.

Dr. Bennett.
