Chapter 9: The Woman Sarah Trusted

I opened the door slowly.

A woman stood outside.

She looked older than I remembered.

But I knew her immediately.

Rachel.

Sarah’s closest friend.

The woman who gave the speech at Sarah’s funeral.

The woman who cried harder than anyone.

The woman who hugged me afterward and said:

“Sarah loved you so much.””

Now she stood on my porch at midnight.

Holding a folder.

“Daniel.””

Her voice shook.

“I know you have questions.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know?””

Rachel looked past me.

At the people inside.

Her eyes landed on Vanessa.

Then Michael.

And she sighed.

“Because it’s finally happening.””

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

She entered slowly.

Nobody spoke.

The tension was unbearable.

Rachel placed the folder on the table.

“I should have done this years ago.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Documents.””

“About what?””

“About Sarah.””

I opened the folder.

The first page was a copy of an email.

Sarah’s name was at the top.

My eyes scanned the words.

Then stopped.

It was an email Sarah sent to Rachel.

Three days before she died.

*I think Vanessa knows I found out.*

My heart sank.

Rachel continued.

“Sarah called me that night.””

“What did she say?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“She said she was scared.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She told me she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Rachel swallowed.

“That Vanessa and Michael weren’t the biggest problem.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked down.

The room felt smaller.

“Who was?””

Rachel reached into the folder.

She pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

My blood froze.

It was Sarah.

Standing outside a building.

Beside another person.

A person I recognized.

A person I trusted.

My father.

I stared at the picture.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Sarah’s father-in-law.

My father.

The man who helped raise Emma after Sarah died.

The man who always told me:

“Family protects family.””

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

Then Michael.

Then me.

“Sarah found out your father was covering up something.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

“Money.””

My hands tightened.

“What money?””

Rachel opened another document.

“Life insurance.””

The room went silent.

“Sarah discovered someone had tried changing the beneficiary.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“Your father.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

I couldn’t speak.

My father?

The man who held my daughter after Sarah’s funeral?

The man who cried with me?

Rachel continued.

“But Sarah didn’t know why at first.””

“Why?””

“Until she found another document.””

“What document?””

Rachel looked at the stairs.

Toward Sarah’s room.

“The one she hid before she died.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Where?””

Rachel looked at her.

“You know where.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Sarah trusted you with it.””

Olivia’s face changed.

Then slowly, she reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small key.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Sarah gave it to me the night before she died.””

I stared at the key.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Olivia looked at Vanessa.

Then at Michael.

Then finally at me.

“Because Sarah told me if Daniel ever found out the truth…”

She paused.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He wouldn’t know who to trust.””

The key sat between us.

A tiny piece of metal carrying three years of secrets.

Rachel whispered:

“The truth Sarah hid is inside the one place nobody would ever think to look.””

I looked toward the kitchen.

Then Sarah’s old room.

Then Emma’s bedroom upstairs.

And suddenly, I knew.

There was only one place Sarah would hide something that mattered more than anything.

A place connected to our daughter.

Rachel said one more thing.

A sentence that made my entire body freeze.

May you like

“Daniel…”

“Before Sarah died, she discovered someone in your family was planning to take Emma away from you.””
