Chapter 5: The Room Nobody Entered
I stood at the bottom of the stairs staring upward.
Sarah’s room.
The door had remained closed since the funeral.
At first, I couldn’t enter because every corner reminded me of her.
Her perfume.
Her books.
Her clothes hanging untouched.
Then months became years.
And eventually, that room became a place nobody mentioned.
Especially Vanessa.
She always said the same thing.
“Daniel, you need to move on.””
I believed her.
Now I wondered if she just wanted me to stop looking.
Emma held my hand.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Is Mommy Sarah mad?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“Then why did Vanessa do bad things?””
I didn’t have an answer.
I knelt down.
“Because sometimes adults make terrible choices.””
Emma nodded slowly.
“But Mommy Sarah protected me.””
I swallowed hard.
“Yes.””
Behind me, Olivia spoke quietly.
“She always did.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She hadn’t moved.
She was watching the staircase.
“You’re not going up there.””
Her voice was soft.
Too soft.
I noticed.
“Why?””
“It’s private.””
I stared at her.
“Sarah’s room is private?””
“Yes.””
I laughed without humor.
“You’ve been in that room.””
Vanessa looked away.
Once.
Only once.
But enough.
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When were you in Sarah’s room?””
“Daniel—”
“When?””
Her silence answered.
I walked upstairs.
Vanessa followed.
“Stop.””
I ignored her.
The old hallway smelled like dust and memories.
The door at the end was still the same.
White paint.
Silver handle.
A small scratch near the bottom from when Emma’s toy car hit it years ago.
I reached for the handle.
Locked.
I turned around.
“Who has the key?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma quietly said:
“Vanessa does.””
My eyes moved to my wife.
She looked stunned.
“Emma, stop.””
But my daughter stepped behind me.
“She goes inside when Daddy is gone.””
The silence was unbearable.
I stared at Vanessa.
“You told me you never entered this room.””
“I only cleaned it.””
“Three years later?””
She didn’t answer.
I held out my hand.
“Key.””
“Daniel.””
“Key.””
Slowly, Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small silver key.
My chest tightened.
She had been carrying it all this time.
I unlocked the door.
The room was exactly how Sarah left it.
Her bookshelf.
Her blue blanket.
The picture frame on the nightstand.
Me and Sarah on our wedding day.
But something was different.
A small red light blinked from the corner.
Emma gasped.
“That’s it.””
I walked closer.
A hidden camera.
My stomach turned.
Vanessa whispered:
“I can explain.””
I looked at her.
“You recorded Sarah’s room?””
“No.””
“Then what is that?””
She had no answer.
I removed the camera from the wall.
There was a memory card inside.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Do you think—”
“I think we should see what’s on it.””
We connected it to my laptop.
There were dozens of files.
Dates.
Times.
Most were recent.
But one folder was different.
The name was:
*SARAH.*
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were three videos.
The first one was dated three days before Sarah died.
I clicked play.
The camera showed this exact room.
Sarah was sitting on the bed.
Crying.
Then Vanessa entered.
My entire body went cold.
Because I had never seen this conversation.
Vanessa closed the door.
“Sarah, you’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
Sarah looked up.
“Leave my family alone.””
Vanessa smiled.
A smile I had never seen before.
“You still think Daniel will choose you.””
Sarah stood.
“You’re sick.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“No.””
She whispered.
“I’m patient.””
The video froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
“I was angry.””
Nobody spoke.
I clicked the second video.
The timestamp was the night before Sarah died.
Sarah was on the phone.
“Olivia, I need you to promise me something.””
My heart stopped.
Sarah continued.
“If something happens, don’t trust Vanessa.””
The video ended.
But the third file remained.
I opened it.
And what appeared on the screen made Olivia cover her mouth.
Because it showed Sarah leaving the house that night.
But she wasn’t alone.
A man was standing beside her.
A man I recognized.
A man I had trusted.
Vanessa whispered his name.
And the room went silent.
“Daniel…”
May you like
I stared at the screen.
Because the man standing beside my dying wife was my own brother.
