Chapter 14: The Family That Lied

For a moment, nobody moved.

I forgot how to breathe.

Sarah stood only a few feet away.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Daniel.””

Her voice broke.

I stared at her.

My mind was fighting my heart.

Because my heart wanted to run to her.

Hold her.

Never let go.

But my mind remembered three years of pain.

Three years of believing she was gone.

“Why?””

It was the only word I could say.

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried.””

“You tried?””

My voice cracked.

“I buried you.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I was trapped.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

I turned.

My mother looked different.

Not older.

Different.

Cold.

“You ruined enough.””

I stared at her.

“You took my daughter.””

“She is my granddaughter.””

“She is Emma’s mother’s daughter.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“Sarah destroyed this family.””

Sarah looked at her.

“No.””

My mother laughed.

“You always thought you were better.””

Sarah shook her head.

“I just wanted my daughter safe.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both women stopped.

I looked at my mother.

“Why?””

Her expression softened.

For a second, I saw the mother who raised me.

Then it disappeared.

“Because I knew Sarah would take you away.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She changed you.””

My mother’s voice became emotional.

“Before Sarah, you listened to me.””

I felt sick.

“So this was about control?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It was about family.””

I looked at Emma.

“She is my family.””

My mother looked at Emma.

“She belongs with us.””

Emma immediately grabbed my hand.

“No.””

That single word destroyed whatever excuse my mother had left.

She looked shocked.

Emma stepped closer to me.

“Daddy protects me.””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

My mother looked away.

Sarah started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For leaving you.””

The honesty hurt.

She continued.

“I thought if I disappeared, Emma would be safe.””

“And was she?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“She ate from a dog bowl.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

Pain crossed her face.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

That was the hardest part.

I believed her.

Because I saw her reaction.

It wasn’t guilt.

It was heartbreak.

My mother suddenly moved toward the door.

“I’m done with this.””

I stepped in front of her.

“No.””

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I’m waiting for the police.””

Her face changed.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to protect yourself anymore.””

A few minutes later, the truth finally started coming out.

The storage unit key Michael gave me led investigators to boxes of documents.

Evidence.

Messages.

Financial records.

Everything.

My mother and Vanessa had been building a case to take custody of Emma.

Michael had helped hide Sarah’s survival.

My father had helped cover up the truth.

And Vanessa had used the hidden cameras to create the illusion that I was unstable.

But one question remained.

Why had Sarah stayed hidden for three years?

That answer came when she and I sat together after Emma fell asleep.

“She threatened Emma.””

Sarah’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Who?””

“My mother.””

I froze.

Sarah looked at me.

“She said if I came back, Emma would disappear.””

My chest tightened.

“She convinced me everyone I loved had turned against me.””

I looked down.

“I thought you abandoned us.””

“I know.””

She cried quietly.

“I thought you hated me.””

I shook my head.

“I never did.””

Sarah looked at me.

“I watched you from a distance.””

My eyes filled.

“You watched?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you come home?””

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What?””

Sarah reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this for the day I could finally tell you.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made me stop.

*Daniel, the accident that started everything was not caused by Vanessa or my mother.*

I looked at Sarah.

“What does that mean?””

She looked terrified.

“There was someone else.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Sarah whispered:

“The person who helped them hide me.””

A name.

A name I never expected.

May you like

And one that made my entire body freeze.

“Your brother.””
