Chapter 8: The Secret Sarah Buried
Nobody moved.
The black SUV sat outside like a ghost from the past.
Three years ago, it had followed Sarah.
Three years ago, my wife died.
And now it was parked outside my house.
I grabbed my phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Michael immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
I turned.
“No?””
He looked nervous.
“Not yet.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because if you call them now, whoever is behind this will disappear.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re asking me to trust you?””
Michael looked down.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I’m asking you to let me help.””
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to throw him out.
But something in his voice stopped me.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I heard fear.
Real fear.
I walked toward the window.
The SUV was empty.
No driver.
No movement.
Just sitting there.
Waiting.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Michael didn’t answer.
“Michael.””
He closed his eyes.
“Someone from Sarah’s past.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“It means Sarah found something she wasn’t supposed to find.””
Olivia crossed her arms.
“You always knew more than you admitted.””
Michael looked at her.
“And you always thought you knew everything.””
“Sarah trusted me.””
“Sarah trusted too many people.””
The words were sharp.
Too sharp.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
They stopped.
“I lost my wife.””
My voice shook.
“I lost three years believing one story.””
I looked at each of them.
“I want the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael nodded.
“Okay.””
He sat down.
“I’ll tell you what happened.””
The room became still.
“Three years ago, Sarah discovered financial records.””
“What records?””
“Money transfers.””
“From who?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her eyes.
“Daniel…”
I felt sick.
“From Vanessa?””
Michael nodded.
“Before you married her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“It wasn’t what you think.””
I turned.
“Everyone says that right before explaining something terrible.””
Michael continued.
“Sarah found payments made to someone connected to her accident.””
My heart stopped.
“Connected how?””
Michael looked at me.
“He was there.””
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“The man who caused the crash.””
My hands went cold.
“Someone killed Sarah?””
“No.””
Michael looked away.
“Not exactly.””
I felt anger rising.
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
He sighed.
“Sarah’s car was tampered with.””
The room went silent.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“She knew?””
Michael nodded.
“She suspected.””
I remembered the video.
Sarah saying she was afraid.
Sarah saying someone wanted her to look unstable.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“Because Sarah made me promise.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid you would do something reckless.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My wife died, and you protected the secret.””
“I protected Emma.””
That stopped me.
Michael looked at the stairs.
“Sarah told me if anything happened, my job was keeping Emma safe.””
I thought about my daughter.
Eating from a dog bowl.
Being afraid.
Michael continued.
“But after Sarah died, Vanessa took control of everything.””
“What do you mean?””
“She convinced everyone Sarah was unstable.””
I remembered.
The whispers.
The relatives saying Sarah was stressed.
The doctor visits people mentioned.
All pieces of a story I never questioned.
“Why would Vanessa do that?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because Sarah found out about her and me.””
I looked away.
That betrayal still burned.
But then Michael added:
“And because Sarah found out something worse.””
“What?””
Michael reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old flash drive.
“Sarah gave me this.””
I stared at it.
“What’s on it?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Everything.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“No.””
Michael looked at her.
“It’s over.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand what happens if he sees it.””
I froze.
“What happens?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You’ll lose everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Good.””
Michael connected the flash drive to the laptop.
A folder appeared.
Only one file.
The name:
*DANIEL_DESERVES_THE_TRUTH.*
My hands shook.
I opened it.
A video began.
Sarah appeared.
But this time, she wasn’t in our house.
She was sitting in a car.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were red.
“Daniel…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re seeing this, I’m probably not there to explain.””
I felt tears burning.
Sarah continued.
“I need you to know something.””
She paused.
“Emma’s life was never in danger because of an accident.””
The screen flickered.
Then Sarah said the sentence that destroyed me.
“The person who hurt me is someone who has been standing beside you from the beginning.””
The video froze.
Then the doorbell rang.
Everyone turned.
A woman’s voice came from outside.
“Daniel?””
Olivia went pale.
Because she recognized the voice.
“It’s her.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
May you like
Olivia whispered:
“Sarah’s best friend.””
