Chapter 10: The Box Beneath Emma’s Bed

I stared at Rachel.

“Take Emma away?””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not emotionally.

Not logically.

My daughter was the one thing everyone claimed to care about.

But every person standing in my house had somehow contributed to hurting her.

Vanessa.

Michael.

My father.

Now I was supposed to believe someone planned to steal her from me.

“Who?””

My voice came out quiet.

Rachel looked at the floor.

“Sarah didn’t know the full plan.””

“Then what did she know?””

“She knew someone was gathering documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

“Custody papers.””

My stomach dropped.

“Custody?””

Rachel nodded.

“She believed someone wanted to prove you were an unfit father.””

I laughed once.

A bitter, empty sound.

“Me?””

I looked toward the kitchen.

“At the same time my daughter was being forced to eat from a dog bowl?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was the answer.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You were building a case against me?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Michael looked away.

That hurt more.

Because even after everything, some part of me still expected him to defend me.

To say this was impossible.

But he didn’t.

Rachel placed another document on the table.

“Sarah found this in Vanessa’s office.””

I picked it up.

It was a draft.

A legal document.

My name was written across the top.

*Petition for Emergency Custody Modification.*

My hands shook.

The reason listed was simple.

*Father’s unstable behavior and inability to provide a safe environment.*

I looked up.

“Unstable behavior?””

Rachel nodded.

“Sarah said Vanessa was collecting evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“She recorded arguments.””

My eyes moved toward the hidden camera.

“The cameras.””

Rachel nodded.

“She was collecting moments where you looked angry.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The arguments.

The accusations.

The way Vanessa pushed my buttons.

The way she waited until I raised my voice.

She wasn’t just fighting with me.

She was creating a story.

A story where I was the villain.

Emma came quietly into the room.

“Daddy?””

I immediately put the papers down.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked at everyone.

“Are we leaving?””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

Her eyes widened.

“Forever?””

I looked at her.

And I meant every word.

“Yes.””

She hugged me.

I held her tightly.

Over her shoulder, I saw Vanessa watching us.

And for the first time, I didn’t see my wife.

I saw a stranger.

A few minutes later, Olivia walked upstairs.

She returned holding a small wooden box.

My breath caught.

“Where did you find that?””

She looked at Emma.

“Under her bed.””

Emma looked confused.

“My bed?””

Olivia nodded.

“Sarah hid it there.””

My hands went cold.

Sarah had hidden something in our daughter’s room.

A place nobody would search.

A place protected by innocence.

I opened the box.

Inside were three things.

A necklace.

A small envelope.

And a flash drive.

The necklace was Sarah’s.

She wore it every day.

I picked up the envelope.

My name was written on it.

*Daniel.*

Just one word.

But seeing her handwriting again nearly broke me.

I opened it.

The letter was short.

If you’re reading this, I’m sorry.

I wanted to tell you everything myself.

But I was afraid.

Not for me.

For Emma.

I swallowed.

The person trying to destroy our family is someone you trust.

Someone you would defend.

Someone who knows exactly how to make you doubt yourself.

I looked at Michael.

Then Vanessa.

Then the flash drive.

The letter continued.

The proof is on the drive.

But before you watch it, remember this: Emma needs you calm. She needs you strong.

Don’t let them turn you into the person they want everyone to see.

My vision blurred.

Sarah knew.

She knew they would try to provoke me.

She knew they would use my anger against me.

I wiped my eyes.

“Play it.””

Nobody moved.

I connected the flash drive.

A single video appeared.

The date was one week before Sarah died.

Sarah was sitting at a table.

Across from her was my father.

My heart stopped.

They were arguing.

Sarah looked furious.

“You promised you would protect Daniel.””

My father looked tired.

“I am protecting him.””

“No.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You’re protecting yourself.””

My father leaned forward.

“You don’t understand how complicated this is.””

Sarah stood.

“You helped them.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

The video continued.

My father looked around nervously.

Then whispered:

“Sarah, if you tell Daniel, you’ll destroy this family.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You already did.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Rachel.

“What was he helping them do?””

Rachel’s face was pale.

She whispered:

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“Your father wasn’t helping Vanessa.””

A pause.

“He was helping someone much closer.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

May you like

My father.

“Where did you find that video?””
