Chapter 3: The Letter Sarah Left Behind

I couldn’t move.

The envelope shook between my fingers.

Sarah’s handwriting.

Three years after losing her, I still recognized every curve of every letter.

She used to leave notes around the house.

Little reminders.

“Don’t forget your coffee.””

“Emma has a doctor’s appointment.””

“Love you.””

Simple things.

Ordinary things.

Things I would have given anything to see again.

But this envelope wasn’t ordinary.

My name was written across it.

And Olivia looked like she had been carrying it for years.

“Where did you get this?””

I barely managed to ask.

Olivia looked down.

“Sarah gave it to me.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“That’s a lie.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

That was enough.

I looked back at Olivia.

“When?””

“The night before she died.””

The room became silent.

I felt like the floor had disappeared.

“No.””

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Sarah was sick.””

“She was.””

“An accident happened.””

Olivia nodded slowly.

“That’s what you were told.””

My heartbeat became louder.

“What does that mean?””

Olivia looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“It means Sarah was scared before she died.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give this to me?””

Olivia’s expression broke.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Stop lying.””

Olivia turned toward her.

“You remember the night at the hospital?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You came into Sarah’s room.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

Olivia continued.

“Sarah was awake.””

I felt dizzy.

“Sarah was awake?””

“She was weak, but yes.””

I stared at Olivia.

“What did she say?””

Olivia swallowed.

“She said she was afraid Emma wasn’t safe.””

My eyes moved to my daughter.

Emma was sitting on the couch, holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she had slept with since she was two.

I walked toward her.

“Emma.””

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

“Did Mommy Sarah ever tell you anything about Vanessa?””

Emma became quiet.

Then whispered:

“She told me to be brave.””

My chest tightened.

“She did?””

Emma nodded.

“She said some people smile when they’re hiding something.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m done with this.””

I blocked the doorway.

“You’re not leaving.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

I looked at my daughter.

“I’m protecting my family.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think Olivia is saving you?””

She pointed at the envelope.

“You don’t even know what’s inside.””

“Then I’ll find out.””

Vanessa stared at me.

Then said something I never expected.

“Ask Olivia why she wasn’t there when Sarah died.””

Olivia froze.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“There are things she hasn’t told you.””

Olivia’s face went pale.

“Don’t do this.””

“What?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Tell him the truth.””

I felt anger rising.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

Then Olivia whispered:

“I made a mistake.””

My stomach dropped.

“What mistake?””

Olivia looked at the floor.

“I was the one who found Sarah after the accident.””

The room went silent.

“And?””

She looked at me.

“And Sarah wasn’t alone.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who was with her?””

Olivia’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

And in that moment, I understood.

The woman who had been hurting my daughter wasn’t just hiding cruelty.

She was hiding something much darker.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single letter.

The first line made my hands go numb.

*Daniel, if you’re reading this, it means I was right about Vanessa.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was already walking backward toward the door.

“Daniel…”

For the first time since I met her, she sounded terrified.

I unfolded the letter.

And beneath Sarah’s first sentence was a name.

May you like

A name I never expected to see.

The name of the person who had been standing beside Sarah the night she died.
