Chapter 7: The Brother At The Door

My blood turned cold.

Michael’s voice echoed from downstairs.

“Daniel?””

For three years, that voice had been my comfort.

My brother’s voice.

The person I called when I couldn’t sleep after Sarah died.

The person who held my shoulder at the funeral.

The person who told me everything would eventually get better.

Now that same voice sounded like a warning.

Olivia looked at me.

“Did he know you were here?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Vanessa stood frozen beside the bed.

“He shouldn’t be here.””

I looked at her.

“You sound surprised.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I closed the laptop.

“Stay here.””

Olivia grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, don’t go alone.””

“He’s my brother.””

“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t.””

I looked at her.

For a moment, I wanted to believe Michael had an innocent explanation.

I wanted to believe there was some misunderstanding.

Because the alternative meant my entire life had been built on lies.

I walked downstairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Michael was standing in the living room.

He looked exactly the same.

Gray jacket.

Tired eyes.

The same familiar face.

But now I noticed things I never noticed before.

The way his eyes moved around the room.

The way he looked toward the staircase.

Like he was searching.

Like he was checking.

“Daniel.””

He smiled slightly.

“I heard you came home early.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

His smile disappeared.

“What?””

“How did you know?””

A pause.

A small one.

But I saw it.

“I called the house.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t.””

Michael looked confused.

“I’m your brother.””

“That’s not an answer.””

The room became silent.

Then Michael sighed.

“Daniel, what’s going on?””

I laughed quietly.

“You tell me.””

His expression changed.

“Where’s Emma?””

My anger rose instantly.

“Why?””

“Why?””

“Yes.””

“Because I’m her uncle.””

I stepped closer.

“You haven’t asked about her once in three years.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

Michael looked hurt.

And for a second, the old Daniel wanted to apologize.

The old Daniel would have.

But the man standing there wasn’t the same person anymore.

Not after seeing Sarah’s videos.

Not after seeing Emma’s fear.

“Did you know?””

Michael’s face changed.

“Know what?””

“About Sarah.””

Silence.

Real silence.

His eyes moved away.

That was all I needed.

“You did.””

“Daniel—”

“You knew.””

Michael ran a hand through his hair.

“I didn’t want you finding out like this.””

My chest tightened.

“Like what?””

“Like some conspiracy.””

I stared at him.

“You were with her that night.””

His face went pale.

“How did you know that?””

I didn’t answer.

His reaction told me everything.

Michael sat down slowly.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

He looked at the floor.

“I was trying to help.””

I almost laughed.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“My wife died.””

“I know.””

“My daughter was left without her mother.””

“I know.””

“And you were there.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Why?””

Before he could answer, Vanessa walked downstairs.

“Michael.””

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

He looked at her.

And they shared a glance.

A glance between two people who had secrets.

I saw it.

“You two still talk.””

Neither answered.

I stepped back.

“How long?””

Michael stood.

“Daniel—”

“How long have you both been lying to me?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

She started crying.

“Please don’t do this here.””

I pointed toward the kitchen.

“Emma ate from a dog bowl in that room.””

Vanessa froze.

Michael looked shocked.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t know?””

His face changed.

A strange mixture of confusion and fear.

“I swear to God, Daniel, I didn’t know that.””

For the first time, I believed something he said.

Because Michael looked genuinely horrified.

Then Olivia appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Daniel.””

Michael looked up.

His face changed immediately.

“Olivia?””

She walked down slowly.

“You remember me.””

Michael stared at her.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Olivia stepped forward.

“You always said I was the problem.””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

Olivia’s voice shook.

“But Sarah did.””

The mention of Sarah changed everything.

Michael looked away.

I noticed.

He was afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael whispered:

“Sarah wasn’t supposed to die that night.””

The room froze.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She was going to leave.””

My heart stopped.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere Vanessa couldn’t find her.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted:

“Stop!””

Everyone turned.

Michael looked at her.

“You wanted the truth.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But Michael continued.

“Sarah had evidence.””

My hands tightened.

“Evidence of what?””

Michael looked toward the stairs.

At the room where Sarah’s final message waited.

Then he said:

“Evidence that Vanessa wasn’t the only person who wanted Sarah gone.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Olivia looked toward the window.

Her face went white.

“What?””

She whispered:

“That car…”

I walked closer.

A black SUV was parked outside.

I didn’t recognize it.

But Olivia did.

Because she said the words that made everyone silent.

May you like

“Daniel…”

“That’s the car that followed Sarah the night she died.””
