Chapter 4: The Name In Sarah’s Letter
The name on the paper made my fingers go numb.
I read it once.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
*Olivia.*
Sarah’s younger sister.
The woman who had just stood in my living room claiming she was protecting my daughter.
The woman who said she loved Emma.
The woman who brought me the video.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Not Vanessa.
Not Olivia.
Not even Emma.
“Daniel…” Olivia whispered.
I looked at her.
“Your name is here.””
Her face crumbled.
“I know.””
“You were there?””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word landed like a punch.
I stepped back.
“You were there the night Sarah died?””
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You let me believe I lost my wife in an accident.””
Olivia wiped her face.
“Because Sarah asked me not to tell you everything unless I had proof.””
I stared at her.
“Proof of what?””
Before Olivia could answer, Vanessa laughed.
A cold, nervous laugh.
“Finally.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“Now you see who she really is.””
I looked at my wife.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa’s expression shifted.
“I knew Olivia was hiding something.””
“You knew she was with Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“Would you have believed me?””
I couldn’t believe her.
“You watched me grieve.””
Her face hardened.
“I grieved too.””
“No.””
I pointed toward Emma.
“You watched my daughter lose her mother.””
Vanessa looked away.
“And you married me anyway.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Three years ago, after Sarah’s funeral, Vanessa had been the person who stayed.
She brought food.
She helped with Emma.
She sat beside me when I couldn’t sleep.
I thought she was my rescue.
I thought she was the person who helped rebuild our broken family.
But now every memory felt different.
Every smile.
Every hug.
Every promise.
Like I had been living inside a carefully designed lie.
I looked at Olivia.
“Tell me everything.””
She nodded slowly.
“Sarah started getting suspicious two weeks before she died.””
“About what?””
Olivia glanced at Vanessa.
“About Vanessa.””
My wife rolled her eyes.
“This is ridiculous.””
Olivia continued.
“She found messages.””
“What messages?””
“She wouldn’t tell me at first.””
“Why?””
“Because Sarah didn’t want to accuse someone without proof.””
I looked down at the letter.
“That sounds like her.””
It did.
Sarah always searched for answers before making judgments.
Even when she was hurt.
Even when she was afraid.
Olivia reached into her coat pocket and pulled out another phone.
“This is what Sarah left me.””
Vanessa immediately moved forward.
“No.””
The reaction was instant.
Too instant.
I noticed.
“What is that?””
Olivia held the phone tighter.
“Something Sarah recorded.””
My heart raced.
“A video?””
She nodded.
“She wanted Daniel to see it if anything happened.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Olivia, don’t.””
That was the first time she sounded desperate.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Desperate.
I stepped toward Olivia.
“Play it.””
She hesitated.
Then pressed the screen.
Sarah appeared.
My entire body froze.
She looked tired.
Pale.
But alive.
Her voice shook.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, something happened.””
I covered my mouth.
Seeing her again was like opening a wound that never healed.
Sarah looked directly into the camera.
“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
The video paused for a second.
Then continued.
“I think someone is trying to make me look unstable. They want you to believe I’m paranoid.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She was staring at the phone.
Terrified.
Sarah continued.
“Daniel, please listen carefully. Protect Emma.””
My daughter looked up at the sound of her mother’s voice.
“Mommy…”
The word broke me.
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Someone in our home has been hurting her.””
I stopped breathing.
The room became silent.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Sarah continued.
“Emma is too young to understand what’s happening. She only knows she’s scared.””
I looked at my daughter.
The dog bowl.
The fear.
The way she looked at Vanessa.
It all made sense.
Then Sarah said something that changed everything.
“I found out Vanessa has been meeting someone behind our backs.””
My hands tightened.
“Who?””
The video glitched.
Sarah looked over her shoulder.
Then lowered her voice.
“If anything happens to me, the person you need to find is—”
The screen suddenly went black.
Olivia looked down.
“It cuts off there.””
I stared at her.
“That’s it?””
She nodded.
“I spent three years trying to recover the rest.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her coat.
“I’m leaving.””
I stepped in front of the door.
“No.””
“You can’t keep me here.””
“I’m not keeping you.””
I looked at my phone.
“I’m waiting for the police.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Daniel.””
For the first time, she looked at me like she didn’t recognize me.
“You would do this to me?””
I looked at Emma.
Then back at her.
“You did this to her.””
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
I looked toward the ceiling.
“What was that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emma grabbed my hand.
“Daddy…”
Her voice trembled.
“There’s another camera.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
She pointed upstairs.
“In Mommy’s room.””
My heart sank.
May you like
Because Sarah’s old bedroom had been locked for three years.
And nobody was supposed to have access.
