Chapter 11: The Father’s Confession
I couldn’t speak.
My father’s voice came through the phone.
Calm.
Controlled.
Like he was calling to ask about dinner.
Not explaining why he was in a video with my dead wife.
“Daniel?””
I swallowed.
“How did you know?””
A pause.
“I know because I knew Sarah made copies.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching me.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“Home.””
I laughed quietly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to listen.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You stood beside me at Sarah’s funeral.””
Silence.
“You watched me break.””
Another silence.
“You watched Emma lose her mother.””
My father sighed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The sentence made my anger explode.
“Everyone keeps saying that!””
I looked around the room.
“Protect me from what?””
Nobody answered.
My father finally said:
“The truth.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then tell me.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Meet me.””
“No.””
“You deserve answers.””
“I deserve answers three years ago.””
His voice softened.
“I know.””
I hated that.
Because he sounded broken.
Not guilty.
Broken.
“Where?””
“Your old family cabin.””
I froze.
The place where Sarah and I spent our first anniversary.
The place nobody had visited since she died.
“Why there?””
“Because that’s where Sarah found the truth.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at her.
“I need answers.””
Michael shook his head.
“Your father is dangerous.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He looked away.
That answer hurt more than anything.
“You knew he was involved.””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected and said nothing.””
“I was trying to find proof.””
I laughed.
“Everyone was trying to find proof.””
I looked at all of them.
“And my daughter was suffering while everyone investigated.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could defend that.
An hour later, I drove to the cabin.
Olivia insisted on coming.
I didn’t argue.
I was done walking into secrets alone.
The cabin looked exactly the same.
Old wood.
Broken porch steps.
The same place where Sarah once laughed because I burned dinner on our first trip.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
The door was unlocked.
That bothered me.
I walked inside.
“Dad?””
No answer.
Then I saw him.
Sitting at the kitchen table.
Older than I remembered.
Smaller.
Like the weight of everything had finally caught up with him.
He looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t sit.
“Talk.””
My father nodded.
“You have Sarah’s videos.””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“Then there’s no point hiding anymore.””
“Who was trying to take Emma?””
He looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
I stared.
“That’s not enough.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“It was bigger than Vanessa.””
“Who?””
He looked down.
“Your mother.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I had been hit.
“My mother?””
My father nodded.
“She believed Emma belonged with her.””
I couldn’t process it.
“Why?””
“Because she never accepted Sarah.””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“She thought Sarah changed you.””
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
He looked ashamed.
“She became obsessed with controlling the family.””
I remembered.
My mother always had opinions.
How Sarah dressed.
How we raised Emma.
How we spent money.
But I never imagined this.
“She worked with Vanessa?””
My father nodded.
“They made a plan.””
“What plan?””
“To prove Sarah was unstable.””
My hands clenched.
“They wanted custody?””
“Yes.””
“And after Sarah?””
My father looked away.
“That was never supposed to happen.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
“Sarah found out too much.””
My heart stopped.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I need you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I didn’t cause Sarah’s death.””
The words hung in the air.
I whispered:
“But you know who did.””
My father didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Then Olivia’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I turned.
“Who is it?””
She slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s Emma’s school.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“They said someone came to pick her up.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Olivia whispered:
“They said the person showed identification.””
May you like
A pause.
“Your mother.””
