Chapter 8: The House With No Basement
The old house looked exactly the way I remembered.
Abandoned.
Silent.
Broken.
I hadn't been here since Emily's funeral.
Back then, I couldn't even walk through the front door.
Too many memories.
Too much pain.
Now I stood there searching for answers.
David unlocked the door.
"You kept the key?""
He nodded.
"Emily gave it to me.""
Vanessa stood behind us.
I still couldn't understand why she came.
Part of me wanted her gone.
Part of me needed her there.
Because every answer seemed connected to her.
We entered.
Dust covered everything.
The air smelled like old wood and rain.
Lily stayed at Rachel's house.
I refused to bring her here.
Not after everything.
David walked toward the hallway.
"Emily kept documents hidden here.""
"Why?""
"Because she didn't trust anyone.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn't react.
That scared me.
We reached the basement door.
Except there shouldn't have been one.
It was behind an old bookshelf.
Hidden.
My heart started beating faster.
"Vanessa.""
She stared at the door.
"I didn't know about this.""
David looked at her.
"That's not true.""
Her eyes filled with anger.
"Don't.""
"You knew Emily found it.""
I looked between them.
"What is happening?""
Neither answered.
I grabbed the handle.
It was locked.
David handed me a key.
"Emily gave me this.""
The lock clicked.
The door opened slowly.
A cold smell came from below.
The stairs creaked as we walked down.
At the bottom was a small room.
Not a basement.
A hidden room.
Inside were boxes.
Files.
Photographs.
And a small recorder.
I picked it up.
"What is this?""
David's face changed.
"That's what Emily was trying to protect.""
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
Emily.
My breath caught.
"If you're hearing this, I failed.""
I closed my eyes.
Her voice.
After all these years.
Still the same.
"I found out who changed Lily's records.""
The recording crackled.
"I found out why they wanted me silent.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Emily continued.
"The person who did this isn't trying to hurt Lily because of the past.""
A pause.
"They are trying to control Lily because of the future.""
The recording stopped.
Everyone froze.
"What does that mean?""
David looked through the boxes.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed a folder.
I turned.
"What are you doing?""
She opened it.
Then her face changed.
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"What?""
She handed me the paper.
It was a legal document.
A guardianship agreement.
My name was on it.
And another name.
Vanessa.
But the date was from before our wedding.
I looked at her.
"You planned this?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Then explain.""
She couldn't.
For once, she had no excuse.
David found another document.
His face went pale.
"Daniel.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He held up the paper.
"It wasn't Vanessa who created the guardianship.""
I stepped closer.
"Then who?""
David turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a signature.
A signature I recognized.
Because I had seen it hundreds of times.
Mine.
I stared at it.
"No.""
David whispered:
"Someone forged your signature before you ever met Vanessa.""
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered.
"Rachel?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Daniel...""
"What happened?""
"Someone broke into my house.""
My blood ran cold.
"Are Lily and Caleb okay?""
"They're safe.""
I exhaled.
Then she said:
"But the person left something behind.""
"What?""
A pause.
Then:
"A photograph of Emily.""
I looked at David.
"What's wrong with that?""
May you like
Rachel's voice dropped.
"Daniel... it's a recent photograph.""
