Chapter 2: The Truth in the Bottle
The police arrived twelve minutes later.
It felt like twelve hours.
Lily sat wrapped in her favorite blanket on the couch while a paramedic checked her.
I never let go of her hand.
Vanessa stood near the kitchen island, repeating the same sentence over and over.
"I was only trying to help her.""
Officer Miller looked at the bottle sitting inside an evidence bag.
"Mrs. Carter, where did you get these pills?""
Vanessa looked away.
"They were prescribed.""
"By whom?""
"My doctor.""
The officer glanced down at his notes.
"Your doctor prescribed medication for your daughter?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"For Lily.""
I felt my stomach drop.
The paramedic looked up.
"Daniel, did Lily have a prescription?""
"No.""
Vanessa quickly said, "I meant a recommendation. Not an official prescription.""
Officer Miller's expression hardened.
"Those are two very different things.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You lied.""
She shook her head.
"No, Daniel. I was trying to protect her.""
"Protect her from what?""
She didn't answer.
That silence was worse than any confession.
Caleb sat at the kitchen table, staring at his hands.
I walked over slowly.
"Caleb.""
He looked up.
"Are you okay?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I tried to stop her before.""
My heart broke.
"What do you mean?""
He swallowed.
"At night, after you went upstairs, she would bring Lily into the kitchen.""
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"Caleb, don't exaggerate.""
The officer raised a hand.
"Let him speak.""
Caleb looked down.
"She told me if I said anything, she would send me away to live with my dad.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"You threatened your own son?""
"I was scared," Vanessa snapped.
The room went quiet.
Scared.
That word stayed in my head.
Scared people made mistakes.
But scared people didn't secretly give pills to children.
The paramedic finished examining Lily.
"She needs to go to the hospital for testing.""
I nodded immediately.
"Take her.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, wait.""
I turned.
"What?""
"You can't just take my daughter away.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
"Our daughter.""
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
I no longer saw her as my wife.
Not in that moment.
The ambulance doors closed behind us.
At the hospital, doctors ran tests while I sat beside Lily's bed.
She looked so small under the white blanket.
"Daddy?""
I leaned closer.
"I'm here.""
"Are you mad at me?""
Those words destroyed me.
"No, sweetheart. Never.""
"But Mommy Vanessa said I was bad because I wouldn't sleep.""
I froze.
"What else did she say?""
Lily looked toward the window.
"She said I was ruining everything.""
My hands tightened.
"Everything?""
She nodded.
"She said after you stopped paying attention to her, everything became my fault.""
I didn't understand.
Vanessa and I had problems.
Every marriage did.
But blaming a seven-year-old child?
That wasn't a problem.
That was something much darker.
A nurse entered with the doctor.
The doctor held a clipboard.
"Mr. Carter, we found traces of a sedating medication in Lily's system.""
My throat went dry.
"What kind?""
The doctor named it.
I recognized the category.
It wasn't something a child should receive without medical supervision.
"Will she be okay?""
"Thankfully, you found her when you did. But repeated exposure could have been dangerous.""
I closed my eyes.
Repeated exposure.
Those two words kept echoing.
Later that evening, when I returned home to get clothes for Lily, I found Vanessa sitting in the dark living room.
She looked exhausted.
But I didn't feel sympathy.
Not anymore.
"Daniel," she whispered.
"Please listen to me.""
I stood near the door.
"You lied to me.""
"I can explain.""
"You drugged my daughter.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I never wanted to hurt her.""
"Then why?""
Vanessa looked down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Because Lily wasn't supposed to be living with us anymore.""
I stared at her.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa wiped her tears.
"You don't know everything about your daughter.""
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
I opened it.
May you like
There was only one sentence.
"Daniel, if you want to know why Vanessa was doing this, look under the floorboard in Lily's room.""
