Chapter 3: The Secret Under the Floor
I didn't sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was terrified.
There are moments when a person realizes their entire reality might be built on something false.
That was me, sitting in the hallway outside Lily's bedroom at 2:00 a.m., staring at the wooden floor.
The message kept replaying in my mind.
Look under the floorboard in Lily's room.
Who sent it?
How did they know?
And what exactly was I supposed to find?
I grabbed a flashlight from the garage and carefully entered the room.
Everything looked normal.
Lily's stuffed animals sat on her bed.
Her drawings covered the walls.
A small pink blanket rested in the corner.
It was the same room I had painted myself two years earlier.
The room where I thought my daughter was safe.
I knelt near the floorboard beside her closet.
After several minutes of searching, I noticed one piece of wood looked slightly different.
My heart started pounding.
I used a screwdriver to lift it.
Underneath was a small plastic bag.
Inside was a stack of papers.
The first page made my hands go cold.
It was a medical report.
Lily's name was written at the top.
But it wasn't recent.
It was from three months ago.
I read the first few lines.
Then I stopped.
Because the report wasn't about sleep problems.
It was about something completely different.
I heard a noise behind me.
I turned around.
Caleb stood in the doorway.
"Dad?""
I quickly hid the papers.
"Caleb, what are you doing awake?""
He looked nervous.
"I knew you would find it.""
My stomach tightened.
"You knew?""
He nodded.
"I put the message on your phone.""
I stared at him.
"You?""
"I'm sorry.""
He stepped into the room.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
I looked at the papers in my hand.
"Caleb, what is going on?""
He sat on the edge of Lily's bed.
"Mom has been hiding things for months.""
"What things?""
He looked at the floor.
"Before you married her, Mom had another plan.""
I frowned.
"What plan?""
Caleb took a deep breath.
"She told me she needed you because you had money and because you were a good person.""
I felt a chill.
"Caleb...""
"I didn't believe her at first.""
He wiped his eyes.
"But then I heard her talking to someone on the phone.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you hear a name?""
He hesitated.
Then he nodded.
"She called him David.""
The room suddenly felt colder.
I didn't know anyone named David.
Not connected to Vanessa.
Not connected to our family.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Caleb looked ashamed.
"Because she told me you wouldn't believe me.""
I looked at him.
"And you believed that?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"I just didn't want Lily to get hurt.""
That sentence broke something inside me.
A ten-year-old boy had been carrying this secret alone.
Trying to protect my daughter.
Trying to fight an adult who was supposed to protect them both.
I opened the medical report again.
The details were confusing.
But one line stood out.
A doctor's note about Lily's previous condition.
A condition Vanessa never told me about.
I heard footsteps downstairs.
Caleb's face changed.
"She's awake.""
I quickly folded the papers.
"Go to your room.""
"But Dad—"
"Please.""
He nodded and ran.
A few seconds later, Vanessa appeared at the bedroom door.
She looked at the floorboard.
Then at me.
And I knew immediately.
She knew.
"You found it.""
Her voice was quiet.
I held up the papers.
"You lied about everything.""
Vanessa stepped inside.
"Daniel, you don't understand.""
"No. I understand that you were hiding medical records about my daughter.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to save her.""
"From what?""
She looked at Lily's bed.
Then she whispered:
"From the same thing that killed her mother.""
I froze.
"What did you say?""
Vanessa slowly looked back at me.
And then she said a name I had never heard before.
"Daniel... Lily's mother didn't die in an accident.""
The room went silent.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa took a step closer.
"Your daughter was never supposed to find out the truth.""
My heart started racing.
"Whose truth?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, my phone rang.
The caller ID showed a name.
May you like
A name that made Vanessa's face turn completely white.
*David.*
