Chapter 14: The Final Confession

Nobody moved.

Thomas stared at Vanessa.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

And somehow that was worse.

"You weren't supposed to hurt her.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I was trying to protect her.""

Thomas laughed.

"Protect her?""

I stepped forward.

"Stop pretending you care.""

Thomas looked at me.

"You think you know what happened.""

"I know enough.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You know what they told you.""

David clenched his fists.

"You're lying.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Am I?""

He pointed toward Vanessa.

"Ask her why Emily really disappeared.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

I already knew.

There was something else.

"Tell me.""

Vanessa whispered:

"Emily wasn't hiding from Thomas.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She was hiding from me.""

The words hit harder than expected.

David looked shocked.

"What are you saying?""

Vanessa looked at Lily.

"I made a mistake.""

My stomach tightened.

"What mistake?""

She took a breath.

"The night of the accident, Emily wanted to expose Thomas.""

Thomas smiled.

"Finally.""

Vanessa continued.

"But before she could, I found out Lily's records had been changed.""

"By Thomas?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

Everyone froze.

"Then who?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Me.""

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"You?""

"I changed one document.""

"Why?""

She cried.

"Because I was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing Lily.""

I stared at her.

"You changed her records?""

"Yes.""

David looked furious.

"Why?""

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"Because the original records showed Lily wasn't biologically connected to Daniel.""

I froze.

Again.

That same fear.

That same secret.

"But Emily knew.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why hide it?""

"Because Thomas was searching for the biological father.""

I looked at Lily.

"Who is he?""

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas smiled.

"Finally.""

I turned toward him.

Thomas stepped closer.

"That is the question everyone avoided.""

David looked at him.

"You don't know either.""

Thomas laughed.

"Oh, I know.""

My heart raced.

"Who?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

The answer came quietly.

"Daniel.""

The world stopped.

"What?""

Thomas smiled.

"Lily's father isn't a stranger.""

I couldn't speak.

"No.""

Vanessa looked devastated.

"I didn't want you to know this way.""

I looked at her.

"Is it true?""

She nodded.

Slowly.

"Yes.""

I felt everything collapse.

The years.

The memories.

The fear.

All of it.

Lily wasn't just the daughter I raised.

She was my daughter.

But now I knew the truth.

I had always been.

Thomas continued.

"Emily discovered the truth before she died.""

"She knew?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Thomas smiled.

"Because she knew telling you would put you in danger.""

I looked at him.

"You killed her.""

His smile disappeared.

"No.""

For the first time, Thomas looked angry.

"Someone else did.""

A sound came from behind us.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

My breath caught.

David whispered:

"Emily.""

Lily gasped.

"Mommy?""

Emily looked at her daughter.

And started crying.

But then she looked at Vanessa.

And said:

"You promised me you would never tell him.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

Emily stepped forward.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel...""

I couldn't move.

Because after all these years...

The woman I buried was standing in front of me.

May you like

Alive.

And she looked terrified.
