Chapter 5: The Hidden Truth About Lily
I didn't let Lily out of my sight.
Not for a second.
That night, I moved her things into my bedroom and locked the door.
It felt wrong.
A father should never have to lock a door to protect his child from someone who promised to love her.
But nothing about my life felt normal anymore.
The next morning, I took Lily and Caleb to my sister Rachel's house.
Rachel opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.
"What happened?""
I looked at the two children behind me.
"Can we talk inside?""
She let us in without asking another question.
Twenty minutes later, she was sitting on the couch, staring at me.
"Daniel... are you sure?""
I placed the documents on the table.
"I'm not sure about anything anymore.""
Rachel picked up the medical report.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at me.
"This is Lily's old hospital record.""
"I know.""
"Why didn't you have this?""
"Because Vanessa hid it.""
Rachel became silent.
She had known Emily.
She knew what losing Lily's mother had done to me.
"You really think Vanessa had something to do with Emily's death?""
I looked toward the window.
"I don't know.""
And that was the hardest truth.
I didn't know.
For years, I thought I understood my family.
I thought I knew who loved me.
Who protected me.
Who would never hurt my child.
Now every memory had a question mark attached.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
It was a photo.
A photo of Vanessa standing outside a building.
The date was from six months before our wedding.
Under the photo was one sentence.
"Ask her why she visited the same doctor who treated Emily.""
My heart stopped.
The doctor.
The one whose name was on Lily's old report.
I searched the name online.
Then I found it.
A private clinic.
I drove there after leaving Lily with Rachel.
The receptionist looked nervous when I showed the report.
"I need information about this patient.""
She shook her head.
"We can't release records.""
"I'm her father.""
She looked at the paperwork.
Then at me.
"I remember this case.""
My heartbeat increased.
"You do?""
She lowered her voice.
"Your wife came here many times.""
"My wife?""
"Vanessa.""
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"For Lily?""
The receptionist hesitated.
"No.""
My stomach dropped.
"Then why?""
She looked around before speaking.
"She came here asking about Emily's records.""
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"Why would she do that?""
The receptionist didn't answer.
Because she didn't need to.
I already knew the answer.
Vanessa wasn't helping Lily.
She was investigating her.
I left the clinic and immediately called David.
He answered on the first ring.
"You found out.""
I stopped walking.
"You knew?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you tell me everything?""
"Because I needed proof.""
"Proof of what?""
David was silent.
Then he said:
"That Vanessa didn't marry you because she loved you.""
My chest tightened.
"Then why did she marry me?""
His answer came quietly.
"Because you were the only person standing between her and Lily.""
I gripped my phone.
"What does that mean?""
Before David could answer, I heard another voice behind me.
A voice I recognized.
"Daniel.""
I turned around.
Vanessa was standing across the street.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But something in her eyes made me stop.
She wasn't angry.
She wasn't pretending anymore.
She looked desperate.
"Please," she said.
I didn't move.
"What?""
She walked closer.
"I need to tell you the truth before David does.""
I stared at her.
"The truth?""
She nodded.
"The reason I gave Lily those pills...""
My hands curled into fists.
"Don't make excuses.""
"I'm not.""
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I'm trying to explain why Lily's life has been in danger since before you ever met me.""
I froze.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
Then whispered:
May you like
"Because Lily isn't your biological daughter.""
The world seemed to stop.
