Chapter 12: The Father in the Shadows

I spent the next hour trying to think clearly.

But every answer created another question.

Emily was alive after the accident.

Vanessa knew.

David knew.

And Lily remembered something that could destroy someone powerful.

Someone who had been hiding in the shadows for years.

Rachel stood in the kitchen making coffee nobody drank.

"This is insane.""

She looked at me.

"Daniel, you can't go alone.""

I nodded.

"I know.""

David shook his head.

"You don't understand.""

I looked at him.

"Then explain.""

He lowered his voice.

"He wants you emotional.""

"What?""

"He knows you will do anything for Lily.""

I looked at my daughter.

"He's right.""

David nodded.

"That's why he chose her.""

My jaw tightened.

"Chosen her for what?""

David looked at Vanessa.

She answered.

"To inherit.""

I frowned.

"Inherit what?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"The family fortune.""

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

"What fortune?""

David stepped forward.

"Emily's father controlled several companies.""

I shook my head.

"Emily never mentioned that.""

"Because she didn't want Lily connected to it.""

Vanessa looked down.

"But after Emily disappeared, Lily became the only heir.""

I felt sick.

"So all of this was about money?""

David nodded.

"At first.""

"At first?""

His face became serious.

"Then it became about control.""

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

*Time is running out.*

I looked at the clock.

Twenty minutes had passed.

David looked at me.

"He's impatient.""

I stood.

"I'm going.""

Everyone reacted immediately.

"No," Rachel said.

"No," David repeated.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Daniel, listen to me.""

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for me.

"He doesn't want to talk.""

"Then what does he want?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Closure.""

That word bothered me.

"How do you know?""

"Because he said the same thing to Emily.""

I froze.

"When?""

Vanessa looked away.

"The last time I saw her.""

The room became quiet.

"You saw Emily after the accident?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

She swallowed.

"In the basement.""

My heart raced.

"The hidden room?""

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Emily was alive.""

"Then why did everyone think she was dead?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Because she told me to let them believe it.""

I couldn't understand.

"Why?""

"Because she knew her father would keep hunting her.""

I looked at Lily.

"And she left her daughter?""

Vanessa cried.

"She left her daughter with someone she trusted.""

The words hurt.

Because I realized something.

Emily hadn't abandoned Lily.

She had sacrificed everything to protect her.

My phone buzzed again.

A final message.

*Bring Vanessa too. She owes me a goodbye.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She had seen it.

Her face turned white.

"No.""

"What?""

She shook her head.

"He knows I'm alive.""

David looked confused.

"Why does that matter?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Because he thought I died too.""

A chill moved through the room.

"What are you saying?""

Vanessa stepped back.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Daniel...""

She looked at Lily.

"The woman who died in that car...""

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"She wasn't Emily.""

I stared at her.

"Then who was she?""

Vanessa looked toward the door.

May you like

And whispered:

"She was me.""
