Chapter 1: The Pills in Her Hand
"SWALLOW THEM, LILY! RIGHT NOW!""
The scream came from my kitchen before I even closed the front door.
For one second, I stood frozen in the hallway, still holding my car keys in my hand, trying to understand what I was hearing.
I was supposed to be at work for another three hours.
I had only come home early because a client canceled our afternoon meeting.
And now, standing behind the kitchen wall, I heard my seven-year-old daughter crying like she was terrified of someone.
"My wife, Vanessa, was forcing strange pills into my daughter's mouth while her own son begged her to stop. But when I stepped inside, I heard something that made my blood run cold.""
I rushed into the kitchen.
Vanessa was standing beside the counter, one hand gripping Lily's chin while the other held three small white pills against my daughter's lips.
Lily's face was wet with tears.
Her tiny hands were pushing against Vanessa's arm, but she was too scared and too weak to fight.
"Please, Mommy Vanessa," Lily cried.
"I don't want them.""
Behind them, Caleb stood near the table, his face pale.
Caleb was Vanessa's ten-year-old son from her previous marriage. I had raised him like my own since Vanessa and I got married four years ago.
He wasn't my biological son.
But I had always told him that blood wasn't the only thing that made a family.
Now he looked at me like he had been waiting for someone to finally come home.
"Mom, stop!"" Caleb shouted.
"She's already sick!""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Shut up, Caleb!""
The boy stepped forward.
"No! You can't keep doing this!""
Vanessa shoved his shoulder.
"Go to your room before you get the same treatment.""
That sentence hit me harder than anything else.
"What the hell is going on?""
My voice made the entire room go silent.
Vanessa froze.
The pills were still between her fingers.
Lily looked toward me, and the moment she saw my face, she broke free.
"Daddy!""
I crossed the kitchen in two steps, pulled her away from Vanessa, and held her against my chest.
Her whole body was shaking.
"Daddy's here," I whispered.
"You're okay.""
But she wasn't okay.
I could feel it.
Her breathing was uneven. Her fingers were locked around my shirt. She buried her face against me like she was afraid Vanessa would take her back.
Vanessa quickly slipped the pills into her pocket.
"Daniel, calm down," she said.
"You're making this look worse than it is.""
I stared at her.
"What medicine were you giving her?""
"Her doctor recommended something to help her sleep.""
I looked down at Lily.
"Lily, sweetheart, did a doctor give you these pills?""
She slowly shook her head.
"No.""
Vanessa immediately stepped in.
"She's confused.""
But Lily grabbed my shirt tighter.
"She makes me take them when you go to work.""
My chest tightened.
"When?""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Daniel, come on. You know how dramatic she can be.""
I ignored her.
"Lily. Look at Daddy.""
She lifted her face.
"How many times did Mommy Vanessa make you take them?""
Her lips trembled.
"Every night.""
The room went silent.
Then Caleb spoke.
"STOP LYING, MOM!""
Vanessa's expression changed instantly.
Not sadness.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"Caleb.""
The way she said his name made him step back.
"I told you to stay out of this.""
"No," Caleb said, shaking his head.
"You told me not to tell Dad because you knew he'd stop you.""
I looked at him.
"Caleb, tell me everything.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"She gives Lily those pills every night after you leave for work.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's angry because I punished him yesterday.""
Caleb ignored her.
"Yesterday, Lily fell in the hallway. She couldn't even walk straight.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Give me the bottle.""
She crossed her arms.
"You don't get to accuse me in my own house.""
"My daughter is seven years old, and she can't even tell me what she's being forced to swallow.""
"You are overreacting.""
"No.""
I pulled out my phone.
"I am calling 911.""
The color disappeared from Vanessa's face.
"Daniel, don't.""
For the first time, she sounded scared.
I held Lily tighter.
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
I dialed.
Before I could press the call button, Vanessa suddenly lunged toward me.
Not toward Lily.
Toward my phone.
I stepped back, and she missed.
Caleb shouted.
"Mom!""
Vanessa stopped.
Her face was different now.
The calm wife.
The caring mother.
The woman everyone trusted.
Gone.
She looked cornered.
And that was when I realized something terrifying.

She wasn't afraid of losing an argument.
She was afraid of what would happen if someone found out the truth.
