Chapter 7: The Girl Who Remembered
I drove faster than I ever had before.
Every red light felt like an enemy.
Every second felt like something I couldn't get back.
Lily was at Rachel's house.
With a man named David Morgan.
A man my wife claimed was dangerous.
A man who claimed he was trying to protect my daughter.
And somehow, both stories felt possible.
That was the part that terrified me.
When I arrived, Rachel was standing outside the house.
Her face told me everything.
Something was wrong.
I jumped out of the car.
"Where is Lily?""
"Inside.""
I rushed through the door.
"Lily!""
My daughter ran toward me immediately.
"Daddy!""
I dropped to my knees and hugged her.
She was shaking.
But she was safe.
Behind her stood David.
For the first time, I saw the man whose name had haunted my family for days.
He was in his late forties.
Tired eyes.
Gray hair.
A face that looked like it had carried years of regret.
I stood up.
"You came to my sister's house.""
David nodded.
"I needed to talk to Lily.""
"You don't get to come near my daughter without permission.""
"I know.""
His answer surprised me.
He didn't argue.
He didn't defend himself.
He simply looked down.
"I made mistakes.""
Vanessa walked in behind me.
David immediately became tense.
"You're here.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Yes.""
The room became silent.
Rachel looked between all of us.
"I think someone needs to explain what's happening.""
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I said:
"Start talking.""
David nodded.
"I knew Emily before she died.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Tell him the rest.""
David looked at her.
"You want me to?""
"Yes.""
His expression changed.
Like he understood something she had accepted.
"I was Emily's brother.""
I froze.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I told you she was hiding things.""
David continued.
"Emily and I had been trying to uncover the truth about Lily's birth.""
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting beside Rachel, holding a stuffed animal.
"What truth?""
David took a breath.
"Emily discovered that Lily's medical records had been altered.""
I remembered the hidden documents.
"By who?""
David looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
"That's what we were trying to find out.""
I shook my head.
"This doesn't explain anything.""
David nodded.
"You're right.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out an old envelope.
"I found this after Emily died.""
He handed it to me.
My hands felt heavy as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Emily's handwriting.
The sight alone almost broke me.
I hadn't seen her handwriting in years.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened to me.
My heart stopped.
Rachel covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
I need you to protect Lily. No matter what anyone tells you, she is your daughter. She always has been.
My vision blurred.
David watched me carefully.
"There is more.""
I continued.
The person you trust most may not be who they appear to be.
I looked up.
Vanessa.
She was crying.
But I didn't know what those tears meant anymore.
I looked back at the letter.
Emily continued.
Lily knows something. She heard something the night everything changed.
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
David looked at Lily.
"Emily believed Lily saw something before she died.""
I felt a chill.
"She's seven.""
"I know.""
"She was two when Emily died.""
David nodded.
"Sometimes children remember things adults think they forget.""
I looked at my daughter.
"Lily.""
She looked up.
"Do you remember Mommy Emily?""
Her face became serious.
"A little.""
I sat beside her.
"What do you remember?""
She hugged her stuffed animal tighter.
"The rain.""
My heart tightened.
"What else?""
"A loud sound.""
David leaned forward.
"What kind of sound?""
Lily closed her eyes.
"A door.""
Nobody moved.
"What door, sweetheart?""
She whispered:
"The basement door.""
I felt confused.
"Basement?""
David looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa's face lost all color.
"What's wrong?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
Her voice came out barely audible.
"Emily didn't have a basement.""
The room went completely silent.
Lily suddenly started crying.
"Daddy, I don't want to talk about it.""
I immediately hugged her.
"It's okay.""
But David looked terrified.
Because he understood something we didn't.
"Daniel.""
I looked at him.
"Your daughter isn't remembering Emily's house.""
My stomach tightened.
"Then whose house?""
May you like
David looked at Vanessa.
"The house where Emily died.""
