Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Name
The phone kept ringing.
David.
The name on the screen seemed impossible.
Vanessa stared at it like she was looking at a ghost.
"Answer it," I said.
She shook her head.
"No.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
Because for the first time since I came home and found Lily crying, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Afraid.
The call ended.
A second later, another one came in.
David.
I pressed the answer button and put it on speaker.
"Daniel," Vanessa whispered.
"Don't.""
I ignored her.
"Hello?""
There was silence on the other end.
Then a man's voice.
"Is this Daniel Carter?""
My entire body went still.
"Who is this?""
The man didn't answer immediately.
"I need to know if Lily is with you.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
"Why?""
The man's voice became quieter.
"Because if she is, then you need to get her somewhere safe.""
My heart started pounding.
"Who are you?""
Another pause.
Then:
"I'm David Morgan.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I saw it.
That small reaction.
The kind of reaction people have when they hear a name they hoped would never appear again.
"Do you know my wife?"" I asked.
David sighed.
"Yes.""
My jaw tightened.
"How?""
Before he could answer, Vanessa reached for the phone.
I stepped back.
"No.""
"Daniel, please.""
"No. You've been telling me pieces of the truth for months. I'm done listening to your version.""
David spoke again.
"Daniel, Vanessa is not the person you think she is.""
I felt anger rising.
"You don't get to call my house and say that without explaining.""
"I will explain everything. But not over the phone.""
"Why not?""
"Because Vanessa is standing right beside you.""
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I looked at my wife.
Her face had gone pale.
David continued.
"She lied to you about Lily's mother.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What happened to Lily's mother?""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.
"Don't listen to him.""
I pulled away.
"Why?""
Because she had no answer.
David spoke softly.
"Her name was Emily.""
I froze.
Emily.
The name hit me like a memory I had buried.
Lily's mother.
The woman who died when Lily was only two years old.
The woman everyone told me I had lost in a tragic car accident.
"How do you know Emily?""
David didn't hesitate.
"Because I was there the night she died.""
The room went silent.
Even the air felt different.
Vanessa whispered:
"Daniel, turn that off.""
I looked at her.
"No.""
David continued.
"Emily discovered something about Vanessa. Something she wasn't supposed to discover.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"That Vanessa had been manipulating people around her for years.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"He's lying.""
But her voice wasn't convincing.
Not even to herself.
I walked downstairs with the phone still in my hand.
"David, start from the beginning.""
He took a breath.
"Emily and Vanessa were friends before you met Vanessa.""
I frowned.
That was impossible.
Vanessa had always told me she barely knew Lily's mother.
"She told me they only met once.""
"That's another lie.""
I looked back at Vanessa.
She was standing at the top of the stairs, watching me.
David continued.
"Emily trusted Vanessa. She thought she was helping her after the divorce. But then Emily started noticing things.""
"What things?""
"Money missing. Strange conversations. Vanessa asking too many questions about her insurance and finances.""
My chest tightened.
I remembered.
The life insurance policy.
After Emily died, there had been a complicated legal process.
Vanessa had helped me through it.
She told me she was just being supportive.
She told me she cared about Lily.
But now every memory felt different.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
David's voice became heavy.
"Because Emily tried to.""
I looked at the phone.
"What?""
"She left evidence.""
My eyes moved toward the papers I found under the floor.
"The medical reports?""
"Those are only part of it.""
A cold feeling spread through me.
"What else is there?""
David didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Something Vanessa has been hiding since before your wedding.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
Not the fake tears I had seen before.
Real fear.
"Daniel," she whispered.
I turned away from her.
"Where do I find the rest?""
David gave me an address.
Before hanging up, he said one final thing.
"Be careful. Vanessa already knows you found out.""
The call ended.
I stood in the kitchen, staring at the dark phone screen.
Then I heard a small voice behind me.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
Lily was standing there in her pajamas.
She looked scared.
I immediately walked toward her.
"Sweetheart, why are you awake?""
She looked past me toward Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
"Because Mommy Vanessa said if you ever found out, she would have to do something she didn't want to do.""
My blood ran cold.
"What did she say she would do?""
May you like
Lily started crying.
"She said she would take me somewhere Daddy could never find me.""
