Chapter 13: The Woman Who Took Her Place

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than any confession I had heard before.

Vanessa.

The woman standing in front of me.

The woman I married.

The woman who had been raising Lily.

Was supposed to be dead.

I looked at David.

He looked just as shocked as I was.

"You knew?""

David shook his head slowly.

"No.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I never wanted any of this to happen.""

I felt anger rising.

"Then explain.""

She nodded.

"I will.""

For the first time, Vanessa stopped trying to control the story.

No excuses.

No carefully chosen words.

Just the truth.

"Emily and I looked similar.""

I frowned.

"Similar?""

"Not enough for strangers to notice. But enough for someone who wasn't looking closely.""

David stepped forward.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"You weren't there.""

The room went silent.

She continued.

"The night of the accident, Emily discovered her father had found out about Lily.""

My hands tightened.

"What does Lily have to do with him?""

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

"Everything.""

She took a breath.

"Emily's father wanted control of the family trust. But Lily was the legal heir.""

David nodded slowly.

"He couldn't access anything while Emily was alive.""

"Exactly.""

Vanessa looked down.

"He needed Emily gone.""

"And you?""

She swallowed.

"I was helping Emily hide.""

The pieces started falling into place.

"The accident...""

Vanessa nodded.

"It was planned.""

My chest tightened.

"By her father?""

"Yes.""

David looked devastated.

"I spent years believing I failed her.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"You didn't.""

A tear rolled down his face.

"I should have protected my sister.""

"You tried.""

She looked at me.

"We all tried.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"You lied to me for years.""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

"Do you know what that did to me?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"No, you don't.""

I looked toward Lily.

"You let me believe I lost her mother.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe our family was normal.""

"I know.""

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at Lily.

"Because Emily made me promise.""

I stared at her.

"She asked you to become her?""

Vanessa nodded.

"After the accident, Emily was injured. She knew she couldn't come back without putting Lily in danger.""

My heart broke.

"So she disappeared.""

"Yes.""

"And you became...""

Vanessa whispered:

"The mother Lily needed.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily walked toward Vanessa.

My instinct was to stop her.

But I didn't.

Lily looked up.

"Mommy Emily loved me?""

Vanessa immediately started crying.

"More than anything.""

"Then why did she leave?""

Vanessa knelt down.

"Because she wanted you to live.""

Lily hugged her.

And that moment hurt more than anything.

Because despite everything Vanessa had done wrong...

She had loved my daughter.

She had protected her.

But she had also made terrible choices.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

The old house.

Now.

David looked at me.

"He knows we're coming.""

I nodded.

"Then we end this.""

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

I looked at her.

"If something happens...""

"No.""

She smiled sadly.

"You don't understand.""

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

"I failed to protect her the right way.""

She wiped her tears.

"Don't let me fail again.""

The old house was waiting.

Dark.

Silent.

Like it had been expecting us.

We entered together.

David carried a flashlight.

Vanessa stayed beside me.

Every step felt like walking into the past.

Then we heard it.

A voice.

"You finally came.""

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Older.

Calm.

Cold.

His eyes moved directly to Lily's photo in my hand.

Then to Vanessa.

"You survived.""

Vanessa froze.

"Thomas.""

My blood ran cold.

Emily's father.

The man behind everything.

He smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take.""

David stepped forward.

"You ruined her life.""

Thomas looked at him.

"No.""

He smiled.

"Emily ruined mine.""

I moved in front of Vanessa.

"You threatened my daughter.""

Thomas looked at me.

"No.""

He tilted his head.

"I protected my family.""

I laughed.

"By drugging a child?""

His expression changed.

"What?""

I realized something.

He didn't know.

He didn't know about the pills.

Vanessa looked confused too.

Then Thomas looked at her.

"What did you do?""

Vanessa said nothing.

And that was when I understood.

Even the person we came to confront didn't know everything.

There was another secret.

Another layer.

Thomas stepped closer.

"Vanessa...""

May you like

His voice became dangerous.

"What exactly did you do to Lily?""
