Chapter 9: The Child Nobody Told Me About
The word stayed in my head.
Your son.
I looked at Danielle.
"Did we have another child?""
She went completely pale.
"Michael...""
"Answer me.""
She lowered her eyes.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to disappear around me.
"What?""
Danielle began crying.
"We had a son.""
I stepped backward.
"When?""
"Before Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Before Lily?""
She nodded.
"Our first baby was born two years before her.""
I tried to remember.
There had been a pregnancy Danielle told me had ended in miscarriage.
I remembered holding her in the hospital.
I remembered the doctor saying there had been complications.
I remembered coming home alone.
"You're talking about the baby we lost?""
Danielle shook her head.
"No. The baby survived.""
My mouth went dry.
"What are you saying?""
She covered her face.
"Your father took him.""
I couldn't speak.
Danielle explained that shortly after our son's birth, my father had insisted on handling certain legal arrangements.
He claimed he wanted to protect the baby from Danielle's wealthy family and the complicated inheritance disputes.
She had trusted him.
Then the hospital told her the baby had died.
But no body was ever released.
No funeral was held.
My father told her that the hospital had arranged a private burial.
I remembered the grief.
The months Danielle spent crying whenever she heard a baby.
And I remembered how my father had encouraged me to move on.
"He told us our son was dead," I whispered.
Danielle nodded.
"He told me the same thing.""
I looked at Officer Harris.
"Can this be true?""
She remained careful.
"We need independent evidence. But if there was a birth record and no corresponding death record, that would be significant.""
Danielle reached into her handbag.
She removed another photograph.
It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
On the back was a handwritten name.
*NOAH CARTER.*
I stared at it.
"That's his name?""
Danielle nodded.
"You chose it.""
I remembered choosing that name.
I remembered telling Danielle that if we ever had a son, he would be named Noah after my grandfather.
My hands began trembling.
"Where is he?""
Danielle shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I felt anger rising.
"How could you keep this from me?""
"I didn't know he was alive, Michael! I only discovered the truth six months ago.""
"Six months?""
"Your father sent me a photograph.""
She pulled out her phone.
The photograph showed a teenage boy standing outside a school.
He had dark hair, a familiar jawline, and my eyes.
Underneath was a message.
Your son is alive. Do not contact him until I tell you.
I sat down heavily.
"How old is he?""
"Fourteen.""
Fourteen years old.
I had missed his first words.
His first steps.
His birthdays.
Every school performance.
Every scraped knee.
I had been mourning a child who was growing up somewhere without knowing who his parents were.
Danielle touched my shoulder.
"I'm sorry.""
I couldn't look at her.
"Why didn't you tell me when you found out?""
"Because I was afraid Jonathan would hurt him too.""
Officer Harris interrupted.
"We need to focus on Lily first. Your father has provided a location, and Jonathan is still holding a five-year-old child.""
I nodded.
But then another thought occurred to me.
"Why would my father want me to come alone?""
Danielle looked at the photograph.
"Because he doesn't trust anyone.""
"Or because he knows something we don't.""
Officer Harris agreed to arrange a controlled operation around the old clinic. She instructed us not to contact my father again.
But before the team could leave, a message arrived on my phone.
It was a video.
I pressed play.
Lily was sitting on a chair in a room with pale blue walls.
Her teddy bear was beside her.
She looked tired.
But she was alive.
A man stood behind her.
Jonathan.
"Hello, Michael," he said.
He held up a folded document.
"I know you've been asking questions about your father. So let me save you some trouble.""
He placed the document on the table.
It was a birth certificate.
My son's birth certificate.
Jonathan smiled.
"Your father didn't steal Noah, Michael. He gave him away.""
Danielle gasped.
Jonathan continued.
"And the woman who raised him knows exactly who his biological parents are.""
He leaned closer to the camera.
"She's someone you see every week.""
I stared at the screen.
Jonathan lifted another photograph.
It showed a woman standing beside a teenage boy.
I recognized her immediately.
My sister, Rachel.
The same woman who was currently sitting beside Lily's empty hospital bed.
My stomach dropped.
The video ended.
I turned toward Officer Harris.
"Call Rachel.""
She dialed immediately.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
But it wasn't Rachel.
It was a teenage boy.
"Hello?""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
The boy hesitated.
Then he said something that shattered the last piece of certainty I had left.
"Hi, Dad. My name is Noah.""
May you like
And in the background, I heard Rachel screaming.
"NOAH, DON'T TELL HIM WHERE WE ARE!""
