Chapter 10: The Son My Sister Stole
"Hi, Dad. My name is Noah.""
For fourteen years, I had believed my firstborn son was dead.
Now I was hearing his voice through a telephone.
And the woman who had helped raise him was my own sister.
"Rachel!"" I shouted.
"Put my son on the phone!""
There was a struggle.
Then Rachel's voice came through.
"Michael, please. You need to listen to me.""
"Where are you?""
"I can explain.""
"WHERE IS MY SON?""
Noah interrupted.
"Uncle Jonathan said you didn't want me.""
I closed my eyes.
Those words hurt more than anything Jonathan could have done.
"Listen to me, Noah. That's not true. I didn't even know you were alive.""
"But Mom said you abandoned me.""
I looked at Danielle.
She was crying silently.
"Noah, your mother and I were told you died. We spent years believing we had lost you.""
"Then why didn't you look for me?""
Because I hadn't known where to look.
Because I had trusted the wrong people.
Because my family had built a wall of lies around a child who should have been sleeping in my arms.
"You're right to ask that," I said quietly.
"And I owe you an explanation. But first, I need to know you're safe.""
Rachel took the phone again.
"Michael, Jonathan has been threatening us. He says if we don't cooperate, he'll hurt Noah.""
"Why are you protecting him?""
"I'm not protecting Jonathan!""
"Then tell me where you are!""
She hesitated.
I heard a door slam somewhere in the background.
Then Noah whispered, "Dad, there's another girl here.""
My heart stopped.
"Lily?""
"Yes. They brought her here yesterday.""
I looked at Officer Harris.
She immediately motioned for the tactical team to prepare.
"Noah, listen carefully. Is Lily hurt?""
"No. She's scared. She keeps asking for you.""
I struggled to keep my voice steady.
"Tell her Daddy is coming.""
Noah paused.
"She said you promised you'd never leave her.""
"I haven't forgotten that promise.""
Rachel suddenly shouted.
"Michael, don't come here! Jonathan has cameras everywhere!""
The call disconnected.
Officer Harris grabbed her radio.
"We have a possible location. Get the technical team working on the call.""
I turned toward Danielle.
"Did you know Rachel had our son?""
Danielle shook her head.
"No. I swear.""
I wanted to believe her.
But I was beginning to understand that almost everyone I loved had been hiding something.
Twenty minutes later, investigators traced the call to a residential property outside Atlanta.
It was a house registered to a company associated with Jonathan.
Officer Harris showed me the address.
"That's where we're going.""
Before leaving, I asked to speak with Rachel again.
The investigators managed to establish another call.
She answered immediately.
"Michael?""
"Put Noah on.""
"He's here.""
A moment later, I heard him.
"Hello?""
"Hey, buddy.""
Silence.
Then he asked, "Are you really my dad?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
"Do you have pictures of me?""
I looked at Danielle.
She nodded.
"Your mother has photographs from when you were born. I have the little blue blanket they wrapped you in.""
"Really?""
"Really.""
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he asked, "Did you ever miss me?""
I felt tears running down my face.
"Every single day, son. Even when I thought you were gone, I missed you.""
I heard him sniffle.
"Uncle Jonathan said you were rich and didn't want a poor baby.""
My hands tightened around the phone.
"Jonathan lied to you.""
"Rachel said he was dangerous.""
"Rachel was right about that.""
Then Noah whispered, "Dad, there's something else. Uncle Jonathan told me I'm supposed to sign some papers tomorrow.""
"What papers?""
"He said they make me the owner of something.""
Danielle stepped closer.
"Ask him if he mentioned the trust.""
I repeated the question.
Noah answered immediately.
"He said something about twelve million dollars. And he said if I signed, Lily would get to come home.""
My blood ran cold.
Jonathan was using our children against each other.
He wanted Noah's cooperation to gain control of Lily's inheritance.
"Don't sign anything, Noah. Do you understand?""
"Yes.""
"Can you trust Rachel?""
There was a pause.
"I don't know anymore.""
Rachel began crying in the background.
"Michael, please don't make him choose sides.""
I took a breath.
"Then tell him the truth.""
She didn't answer.
Finally, she whispered, "I was told your baby died. Your father came to me afterward and said Danielle had abandoned him. He asked me to raise him.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he threatened to have me arrested if I did. He said I had helped falsify the adoption papers.""
"Did you know he was alive?""
"Not at first.""
"When?""
Rachel broke down.
"When he was three. By then, I was afraid of losing him.""
I closed my eyes.
"You let me mourn my son for fourteen years.""
"I know.""
"And you let me believe he was dead.""
"I'm sorry.""
I ended the call.
Officer Harris approached.
"Mr. Carter, we're ready.""
As we moved toward the vehicles, Danielle grabbed my hand.
"Michael, whatever happens, we have to bring both children home.""
I nodded.
But then Officer Harris received a final message from the surveillance team.
The house was empty.
Jonathan had already left.
And the security cameras showed him driving toward the old clinic.
He hadn't taken Noah.
He hadn't taken Lily.
May you like
He had taken something else.
The original trust documents.
