Chapter 14: The Father Who Sold His Family
The railway warehouse stood near an abandoned industrial district.
Its windows were broken, and weeds covered the loading area.
Officer Harris ordered everyone to remain behind the tactical vehicles.
Laura had agreed to help identify the building's entrances.
Danielle stood beside me, clutching the twins' photographs.
I couldn't stop thinking about my father.
The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle.
The man who had attended my graduation.
The man who had supposedly died five years earlier.
He had stolen my children.
He had separated them from their mother.
And now he was holding my daughter hostage.
"Michael," Danielle whispered.
I turned.
"Yes?""
"If your father is inside, let the officers handle him.""
I nodded.
But I knew I would struggle to remain calm.
Officer Harris received a message.
"They're inside. We have three visible suspects.""
"Children?""
"Two.""
I felt my chest tighten.
Then a loudspeaker sounded.
"WE HAVE POLICE OUTSIDE. COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!""
Nothing happened.
Instead, a voice came through a speaker near the entrance.
My father's voice.
"Michael, my boy. Come inside.""
I stepped forward.
Officer Harris stopped me.
"Absolutely not.""
"He wants me.""
"That's exactly why you shouldn't go.""
My father spoke again.
"I have your children. If you want them alive, send everyone away.""
I looked toward Danielle.
She was crying.
Then I heard Lily.
"DADDY!""
I nearly ran toward the building.
"Lily! I'm here!""
"Please come get me!""
Another voice interrupted.
"Enough!""
Jonathan.
Then my father spoke.
"Michael, I only need five minutes.""
Officer Harris quietly signaled to the tactical team.
I took a breath.
"Fine," I shouted.
"But I want to see the children.""
A side door opened.
My father appeared.
He looked older than the photograph.
His hair was almost completely white, and he leaned heavily on a cane.
But he was alive.
He looked at me and smiled.
"Hello, son.""
I stared at him.
"You let me bury you.""
He nodded.
"It was necessary.""
"Necessary?""
"Jonathan had become dangerous. I needed him to believe I was gone.""
"You used my children as protection?""
My father sighed.
"Everything I did was to preserve the family fortune.""
I felt sick.
"Your grandchildren were not investments.""
He ignored me.
"Bring me the trust documents, and we can end this.""
"Where are Lily and Noah?""
"Inside.""
"Let them go.""
"First, the documents.""
Danielle stepped beside me.
"You're a monster.""
My father looked at her.
"You were always the problem, Danielle. You refused to understand how business works.""
"I was pregnant with your grandchildren!""
"And I made sure they would inherit more money than they could ever spend.""
"You separated them from their parents!""
My father raised his voice.
"I protected them from your mistakes!""
Then he turned toward me.
"Do you know what happened after you married Danielle? Her family controlled assets worth millions. Your company was struggling. I needed that partnership.""
I stared at him.
"So you planned to steal her inheritance.""
"I planned to protect your future.""
"And when Danielle refused?""
He looked away.
"Things became complicated.""
I felt my hands trembling.
"Did you arrange the accident?""
My father remained silent.
"Did you kill my father?"" I shouted, pointing at him.
For a moment, he looked confused.
Then he gave a bitter laugh.
"You're asking whether I killed myself?""
I froze.
He had just exposed the lie.
The man who had supposedly died five years ago had faked his own death.
He continued.
"Jonathan arranged the accident. I arranged the disappearance. We were supposed to share control of the trust.""
"Then why turn against Jonathan?""
"Because he wanted everything.""
My father stepped closer.
"And now I intend to take back what belongs to me.""
Behind him, Jonathan appeared.
He held a folder.
"Enough talking.""
He shoved my father aside.
"Give us the documents, Michael.""
I stared at him.
"You destroyed everything.""
Jonathan shrugged.
"You had everything handed to you. The company. The house.
The wife. The children. I built your success while you played the loving father.""
"You were my best friend.""
"Exactly. I knew where all your weaknesses were.""
He opened the folder.
Inside was a guardianship agreement.
Both children's names were listed.
My father's signature appeared beneath the document.
Jonathan smiled.
"Your father has already signed. We only need your authorization to transfer the assets.""
I looked at the paper.
Then at my father.
"You forged the children's identities.""
My father didn't answer.
Jonathan took another step.
"Sign it.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
His expression changed.
"Then you won't see your children again.""
From somewhere inside the warehouse, Lily began screaming.
"DADDY! NO!""
I moved forward.
A hand grabbed my sleeve.
It was my father.
He leaned close and whispered:
"Michael, sign it. You have no idea what happens if Jonathan discovers the truth about Eli.""
I stared at him.
"What truth?""
His eyes filled with something that looked almost like fear.
"Eli isn't the only child we hid from you.""
Before I could respond, a gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
The officers shouted.
May you like
Jonathan dropped the folder.
And Danielle screamed my name.
