Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recording

The recording began with a metallic click.

Then came Lily's crying.

"Daddy, please! I promise I'll be good!""

I felt my knees weaken.

The video showed the laundry room door from Caleb's hiding place near the hallway.

Vanessa stood outside it, holding a glass of wine.

"Stop crying, Lily. Nobody is coming to rescue you.""

My daughter was barely visible through the narrow gap beneath the door.

"Please, Mommy Vanessa. I'm scared.""

"Then perhaps you'll remember this the next time you disobey me.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn't look embarrassed.

She looked furious.

"Turn that off, Caleb!""

But Caleb stepped behind me.

"No!""

The video continued.

Vanessa's phone rang.

She glanced toward the stairs before answering.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Is everything under control?""

"Yes," Vanessa replied.

"Although Michael is becoming a problem.""

"Has he noticed anything?""

"No. He still thinks Lily's mother died in that accident.""

My entire body went rigid.

Then the man laughed softly.

"Good. We can't afford to have him asking questions.""

Vanessa leaned against the laundry room wall.

"Don't worry. Michael still believes every word the hospital told him.""

I stepped closer to the phone.

I recognized the man's voice.

Dr. Richard Collins.

He had signed Danielle's death certificate.

I had shaken his hand at the hospital three years earlier. He had looked me in the eyes and told me there was nothing anyone could have done.

My wife continued speaking.

"What about the documents?""

"They're safe," the doctor replied.

"But you need to keep Michael away from the old records.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"And what happens if Danielle contacts him?""

My heart stopped.

Danielle?

I grabbed Caleb's phone.

"Play that again.""

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Give me that!""

I moved out of reach.

"Did you just say Danielle might contact me?""

She stared at me.

"I was talking about something else.""

"Don't lie to me!""

Lily started crying again.

I immediately lowered my voice.

"Baby, it's okay. Daddy's here.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Michael, you're misunderstanding a private conversation.""

"Then explain it.""

She opened her mouth but said nothing.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

I called 911.

When the dispatcher answered, I explained that my five-year-old daughter had been repeatedly deprived of food and locked inside a laundry room.

I also requested medical assistance to examine her.

Vanessa began pacing.

"You're calling the police on your own wife?""

"I'm calling because my daughter needs protection.""

"You'll destroy this family!""

I looked at the empty pink plate.

"You destroyed it.""

Within twenty minutes, two officers arrived with an emergency medical technician.

One officer, a woman named Officer Harris, knelt beside Lily.

"Hi, sweetheart. Can you tell me when you last ate?""

Lily looked at me before answering.

"Yesterday morning.""

Officer Harris exchanged a glance with her partner.

"Yesterday morning?""

Lily nodded.

"Caleb gave me crackers last night.""

The EMT gently checked her condition and asked me to bring her to the hospital for a full examination.

Meanwhile, Officer Harris spoke with Vanessa.

"Ma'am, we need to understand why this child was locked in a room.""

Vanessa immediately changed her tone.

"Officer, this is a family misunderstanding. My stepdaughter is difficult, and my husband has always been overly protective.""

Caleb stepped forward.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Caleb, don't you dare.""

Officer Harris raised a hand.

"Let him speak.""

Caleb took a shaky breath.

"She does it whenever Mr. Michael goes to work. Sometimes Lily has to watch us eat because Mom says she's not allowed to have food.""

Madison suddenly started crying.

"Mommy told me not to tell Daddy.""

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

"Madison, stop!""

But the little girl continued.

"She said Lily wasn't supposed to live here forever.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?""

Nobody answered.

Then Madison added something else.

"Mommy said when the other lady comes back, Lily won't need this house anymore.""

I crouched beside her.

"What other lady, sweetheart?""

Madison looked frightened.

"The lady in Mommy's pictures.""

Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.

"That's enough!""

Officer Harris immediately intervened.

"Ma'am, step away from the child.""

I took Lily to the hospital with Caleb and Madison accompanying us under the officers' supervision.

At the hospital, a doctor examined Lily and ordered blood tests. She was dehydrated and underweight, although we wouldn't know the full extent of her nutritional condition until the results came back.

I sat beside her bed, holding her tiny hand.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, princess?""

"Am I in trouble?""

My throat tightened.

"No. You haven't done anything wrong.""

"Is Mommy Vanessa angry?""

I brushed the hair away from her forehead.

"That's not your responsibility, sweetheart.""

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered, "Daddy, can I tell you something about my real mommy?""

I froze.

"What about her?""

Lily reached into the pocket of her little dress.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in Mommy Vanessa's bedroom.""

I carefully unfolded it.

It was an old photograph.

Danielle was standing outside a white building, holding a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written a date.

A date from two years after the accident that supposedly killed her.

My fingers began trembling.

I turned the photograph over again.

May you like

Underneath the date were five handwritten words.

She is alive. Don't trust Vanessa.
