Chapter 7: My Father's Secret Agreement
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
I stared at the document Officer Harris had shown me.
My father's signature was unmistakable.
I had seen it thousands of times growing up. He signed birthday cards, business contracts, and the letters he sent me when I was away at college.
But this signature was attached to something horrifying.
If Danielle refuses to cooperate, use the child.
Three months before Lily was born.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Officer Harris placed the document inside an evidence sleeve.
"We haven't established whether it's authentic.""
"My father was dead before Danielle disappeared. He couldn't have been involved.""
Danielle slowly raised her head.
"Michael, your father wasn't the man you thought he was.""
I turned toward her.
"What are you saying?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Your father approached me before our wedding. He wanted me to sign documents transferring control of my family's investments to his company.""
I shook my head.
"He never mentioned anything like that.""
"Because I refused.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he threatened to destroy your career if I did.""
I stared at her.
Danielle continued.
"He told me your father had arranged a business partnership with my family. But when I reviewed the paperwork, I discovered several fraudulent clauses. I confronted him, and he became furious.""
I remembered my father's temper.
He had been a powerful businessman who believed money could solve every problem.
But threatening Danielle?
Using our unborn daughter?
I couldn't reconcile the two.
"Did you keep any evidence?"" I asked.
Danielle nodded.
"One copy. I hid it with the original trust documents.""
"Where?""
"Inside the old clinic.""
Before I could ask another question, Officer Harris's phone rang.
She listened briefly, then looked at me.
"We've identified the vehicle used to remove Lily.""
"Where is it?""
"Abandoned near an industrial property outside Atlanta.""
"Then let's go!""
She raised her hand.
"We have units moving there. You are not going anywhere until we establish that it's safe.""
I clenched my fists.
"That's my daughter!""
"And that's exactly why we cannot rush into a situation where the suspect may be armed or expecting you.""
Danielle stepped closer.
"I know where Jonathan is taking her.""
Officer Harris turned.
"How?""
"There's an underground room at the old clinic. It's where Collins kept me after the accident.""
The room went silent.
Danielle described a side entrance behind the building, a narrow corridor, and a storage room with no windows.
"I heard Jonathan talking there once," she explained.
"He said it was the safest place to keep something valuable.""
Officer Harris immediately contacted the tactical team.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Jonathan.
One hour. Come alone. Bring Danielle's documents.
A second message followed.
It contained a photograph of Lily sitting on a chair.
Her cheeks were wet.
She was holding her pink teddy bear.
Underneath, Jonathan had written:
You have forty-five minutes.
I felt my anger turn into something colder.
I looked at Officer Harris.
"Can you track this number?""
"We're working on it.""
Danielle grabbed my hand.
"Michael, don't go alone.""
"I'm not leaving Lily with him.""
"I know. But listen to me. Jonathan is dangerous. He believes he has nothing left to lose.""
I looked at her.
"Then what do we do?""
She hesitated.
"Give him what he wants.""
Officer Harris immediately objected.
"We cannot hand over original evidence to a suspected criminal.""
Danielle shook her head.
"Not the real documents. Copies.""
She explained that she had photographed the original records before hiding them. The copies contained enough information to convince Jonathan that she had everything he needed.
Officer Harris considered the idea.
"We can use that to arrange a controlled meeting.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
Before we left, I asked Danielle one question.
"Why did you come back now?""
She looked toward the photograph of Lily.
"Because someone contacted me two weeks ago. They said Jonathan had started looking for the trust again.""
"Who contacted you?""
She swallowed.
"Your father.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible. He's dead.""
Danielle slowly opened her handbag.
She removed a small envelope and handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting belonged to my father.
Michael, if you are reading this, the truth has finally caught up with us. I made a terrible mistake years ago. Your daughter is in danger because of something I did.
At the bottom was a date.
Three days before my father's funeral.
And beneath his signature was a handwritten address.
The address belonged to a private bank in Switzerland.
Officer Harris read it twice.
"Mr. Carter, do you recognize this institution?""
I nodded slowly.
It was the bank where my father had kept his most confidential accounts.
Then Danielle whispered something that changed everything.
"Your father didn't die naturally, Michael.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Jonathan told me he arranged your father's death because he discovered the money was being transferred to Lily's trust.""
