Chapter 4: The Woman in the Hospital Room
For three years, I had dreamed about hearing Danielle's voice again.
I imagined her walking through our front door, wrapping her arms around me, and telling me everything would be okay.
I imagined introducing her to the little girl who had inherited her smile.
But I never imagined hearing her beg me to protect our daughter from people who were supposed to be family.
"Rachel, don't let anyone take Lily out of that room!"" I shouted into the phone.
"I'm trying, Michael! She's standing beside the bed!""
"Put Lily on the phone!""
There was a brief silence.
Then a tiny voice spoke.
"Daddy?""
"Baby, listen to me. Stay with Aunt Rachel. Don't go anywhere with anyone until I get there.""
"Okay, Daddy.""
I ended the call and turned toward Officer Harris.
"Someone claiming to be Danielle is at the hospital.""
Officer Harris immediately grabbed her radio.
"We're going there now.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"No!""
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
"You can't let Danielle near Lily!""
I stared at her.
"You're going to explain everything.""
"Michael, you don't understand. Danielle isn't safe.""
"She's my daughter's mother!""
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"She came back because she knows about the money. She doesn't care about Lily!""
I pulled away.
"You have exactly one chance to tell me the truth.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Jonathan told me Danielle had to disappear. I was only supposed to make sure she stayed away.""
Officer Harris stepped closer.
"Who is Jonathan?""
"Michael's business partner.""
"Why would he want Danielle to disappear?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Because she discovered something.""
Before I could ask another question, Officer Harris received a radio transmission.
The hospital security team had confirmed that a woman matching Danielle's description was inside Lily's room.
We rushed outside.
During the drive, I called Rachel again.
"What's happening?""
"She's crying, Michael. She's holding Lily's hand.""
"Has she tried to leave?""
"No. But Lily recognizes her.""
My heart pounded.
"Put the phone on speaker.""
I heard a woman speaking softly.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Lily answered in a small voice.
"Are you really my mommy?""
The woman began crying.
"Yes, baby. I'm your mommy.""
"Why didn't you come home?""
There was a long silence.
Then Danielle whispered, "Because someone told me you would be hurt if I did.""
I pressed my forehead against the car window.
When we reached the hospital, I ran through the entrance and nearly collided with a nurse.
"Room 214!""
I pushed open the door.
And there she was.
Danielle.
Her dark hair was shorter. Her face was thinner. A pale scar ran along her jaw.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
She stood beside Lily's bed, holding our daughter's hand.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Danielle looked at me.
"Michael.""
I couldn't speak.
She took one hesitant step forward.
"I'm sorry.""
I stared at her.
"You're alive.""
She nodded, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Yes.""
"You're alive, and you let me bury an empty casket?""
Danielle covered her mouth.
"I didn't have a choice.""
I laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"You had three years, Danielle. Three years of watching me raise our daughter alone.""
"I know.""
"Do you know how many times Lily asked me why her mother wasn't coming home?""
Danielle began sobbing.
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
Rachel gently moved Lily away from the conversation.
"Michael, she needs to explain.""
I looked at Danielle.
"Then explain.""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Three years ago, I discovered Jonathan was stealing money from the company. He had created fake suppliers and was transferring millions through accounts controlled by someone at the hospital.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with your accident?""
"I found documents proving it. Jonathan discovered I had copied them.""
She paused.
"Two days later, someone tampered with my car.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did Jonathan cause the accident?""
"I don't know who physically did it. But I know he knew about it beforehand.""
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"Because the first person I trusted was Dr. Collins. He told me you were involved.""
I stepped backward.
"What?""
"He showed me bank transfers with your signature. He said you had agreed to help Jonathan get rid of me.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know that now.""
Danielle looked toward Lily.
"After the accident, Collins told me I had to disappear. He said Jonathan would hurt you and Lily if I contacted you.""
I stared at her.
"And Vanessa?""
Danielle's face changed.
"Vanessa was the person they hired to watch you.""
The door opened.
Officer Harris entered with Vanessa behind her.
Danielle immediately stiffened.
"You brought her here?""
I looked at Vanessa.
"She has been starving Lily.""
Danielle's eyes filled with horror.
"What?""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
Danielle stepped forward.
"You locked my daughter in a laundry room?""
"Don't act like you know everything!"" Vanessa snapped.
Officer Harris intervened.
"That's enough.""
Danielle looked at me again.
"Michael, there's something else. Jonathan didn't just want me gone because of the company.""
"What else?""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Jonathan standing beside Dr. Collins.
A little girl stood between them.
I recognized the pink coat.
I recognized the small face.
It was Lily.
But the photograph had been taken only six months ago.
May you like
Danielle pointed to the date.
"Michael, Jonathan has been visiting our daughter without your knowledge.""
