Chapter 1: The Dinner Plate

The first thing I saw when I walked into my kitchen was my five-year-old daughter crying beside an empty chair.

The second thing I saw was my wife scraping her dinner into the trash.

And the third thing was my stepson standing up, trembling, with a secret that would eventually destroy everything I thought I knew about my family.

I wasn't supposed to be home until seven.

But a canceled business meeting brought me back to our Atlanta home shortly after four.

I had barely closed the front door when I heard a small voice coming from the kitchen.

"Please, Mommy Vanessa. I'm still hungry.""

Then my wife's voice answered.

"I already told you. You don't deserve dinner tonight.""

I dropped my briefcase.

When I reached the kitchen doorway, Vanessa was holding Lily's pink plate over the trash can. My daughter's chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans were already scattered inside.

At the dining table, Vanessa's children, Caleb and Madison, continued eating.

Neither child had an empty plate.

Lily stood beside her chair in her little yellow dress, rubbing her stomach.

"Daddy?""

Her voice broke.

I rushed toward her and lifted her into my arms.

"Sweetheart, what happened?""

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

"I'm hungry, Daddy.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What the hell is going on?""

My wife jumped, nearly dropping the plate.

"Michael! You're home early.""

"That's obvious. Why is my daughter crying?""

Vanessa placed the plate in the sink and folded her arms.

"She was being disrespectful. I told her to finish her vegetables, and she started demanding more chicken. When I refused, she threw a tantrum.""

I stared at the food scattered in the garbage.

"So you threw away her entire dinner?""

"Don't exaggerate. She needs to learn that she can't always get what she wants.""

I looked at the dining table.

Caleb had chicken on his fork. Madison was dipping a piece of bread into her gravy.

"Why are your children eating while mine goes hungry?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Because my children know how to behave.""

Before I could respond, Caleb quietly put down his fork.

"That's not what happened.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Caleb, don't start.""

He swallowed.

"Lily didn't throw anything. She just asked for another piece of chicken.""

"Caleb!""

"But you said she wasn't allowed to have more because she wasn't your real daughter.""

The kitchen went silent.

Vanessa's face changed.

"Go upstairs. Now.""

Caleb looked at me.

"I heard her say it, Mr. Michael.""

I tightened my arms around Lily.

"Vanessa, did you really say that?""

She let out an irritated laugh.

"Michael, please. You're going to believe a child over your own wife?""

I looked down at Lily.

"Baby, is this the first time Mommy Vanessa has taken your food?""

My daughter didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she pressed her face against my shoulder.

Then she whispered something that made my stomach turn.

"Daddy, can you stay home tomorrow?""

"Of course. Why?""

Her little fingers tightened around my shirt.

"Because when you go to work, Mommy Vanessa doesn't give me breakfast.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What?""

"She says I'm eating food that belongs to Caleb and Madison.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, she's making things up. She's always been dramatic.""

Lily began crying harder.

"Caleb gives me crackers when Mommy isn't looking.""

I turned toward my stepson.

"Is that true?""

Caleb nodded.

"Yesterday, I gave her half my sandwich.""

Vanessa slammed her hand against the table.

"ENOUGH!""

Madison flinched.

Caleb lowered his eyes, but he continued speaking.

"Mom caught me. She made Lily sit in the laundry room.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"For how long?""

"Until dinner.""

Vanessa pointed toward the staircase.

"Both of you, upstairs!""

Caleb shook his head.

"She locked the door.""

I stared at my wife.

"Did you lock my five-year-old daughter in the laundry room?""

"It was a punishment!""

"She's five years old!""

"She needs boundaries, Michael. You spoil her because you feel guilty about Danielle.""

The mention of my late wife made me pause.

Danielle had supposedly died in a car accident three years earlier.

Since then, I had raised Lily alone until I married Vanessa eight months ago.

I had believed Vanessa would become a loving mother figure.

Instead, my daughter was begging me for food in her own home.

I gently placed Lily in a chair and pulled out my phone.

Vanessa moved between me and the kitchen door.

"What are you doing?""

"Calling someone.""

"Who?""

"Someone who can explain why my daughter has been starving in my absence.""

Her expression shifted.

"Michael, don't make a decision you'll regret.""

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Move.""

Then Caleb approached me.

He was holding an old phone with a cracked screen.

"Mr. Michael?""

"What is it, Caleb?""

His eyes flickered toward his mother.

"There's something else. Something Mom doesn't know I have.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Caleb unlocked the phone.

"I recorded her last night.""

And when he pressed play, I heard my wife's voice saying a name I hadn't heard in three years.

Danielle.
