Chapter 12: The Woman Behind the Lies
I stared at the photograph.
Rachel was standing beside Noah.
My father stood behind them.
And the unfamiliar woman had one hand resting on Noah's shoulder.
She looked to be in her early forties, with dark hair and a small scar above her eyebrow.
Danielle stepped closer.
The moment she saw the woman, she covered her mouth.
"No.""
I turned.
"Who is she?""
Danielle shook her head.
"That can't be right.""
"Danielle, who is she?""
She looked at me with frightened eyes.
"Her name is Laura.""
I waited.
"Laura was my father's personal assistant.""
I frowned.
"Why is she standing with Noah?""
Danielle's voice dropped.
"Because she was supposed to take care of him after he was born.""
I felt something twist in my stomach.
"Take care of him?""
Danielle nodded.
"Before I gave birth, my father hired Laura to help with the arrangements. He told me she would manage the nursery while I recovered.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Are you saying she raised our son?""
"Partly. But I don't understand why she's here now.""
An investigator approached.
"We found another document in the room.""
He handed it to Officer Harris.
It was an adoption agreement.
The child's name was Noah Carter.
The adoptive mother's name was Laura Mitchell.
But the signature at the bottom belonged to Rachel.
My sister had signed away my son's identity.
I felt the walls closing in.
"Where is Rachel now?""
The investigator shook his head.
"We haven't located her.""
I looked at the document.
"She was raising him. Why would she sign this?""
Danielle took the paper.
"Because someone wanted Noah's legal identity changed without Michael knowing.""
Officer Harris studied the dates.
"The agreement was signed when Noah was three.""
Three years old.
That meant Rachel had known he was alive for at least eleven years.
She had attended family gatherings.
She had watched me celebrate Lily's birthdays.
She had listened while I talked about the son I believed I had buried.
And she had said nothing.
I walked out of the clinic.
The evening air felt cold against my face.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Rachel.
Please don't hate me. I did what I thought would keep Noah safe.
I typed a response.
Where is he?
Her reply came immediately.
With Laura.
I called her.
She answered after the first ring.
"Michael?""
"Where is my son?""
"He's safe.""
"Stop saying that. Where is he?""
Rachel began crying.
"Laura has him.""
"Why?""
"Because Jonathan told me the police were coming. He said Noah would be safer with her.""
"Safer from whom?""
"From you.""
I froze.
"What?""
Rachel continued.
"He told me you had signed documents giving up your parental rights. He showed me your signature.""
I closed my eyes.
"Another forgery.""
"I know that now.""
"Rachel, where is Laura?""
"I don't know.""
"You're his mother in every way that matters, but you lied to him about his real parents. You lied to me for fourteen years. Do you understand what you've done?""
She sobbed.
"I was scared.""
"So was Danielle. So was Lily. So was I. But none of us used a child as an excuse to hurt someone else.""
Rachel went silent.
Then she whispered, "There's something else you need to know.""
I waited.
"Laura isn't just a former assistant. She was married to Jonathan.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Married?""
"They divorced years ago. But she never stopped helping him.""
"Why would she take Noah?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Because Laura believes Noah belongs to her.""
The call ended.
I turned toward Officer Harris.
"We need to find Laura Mitchell.""
She immediately began making inquiries.
Within minutes, the team located an address connected to Laura.
But before they could move, Danielle received a message.
She looked at her phone and began shaking.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She handed it to me.
It was a photograph of Lily and Noah sitting together on a couch.
They were both alive.
Lily was holding Noah's hand.
Underneath the picture was a message.
The children are fine. Tomorrow, bring the original trust documents. No police. No mistakes.
A second message followed.
And bring the woman who gave birth to Noah.
I looked at Danielle.
She was staring at the photograph.
"Michael," she whispered, "there's something about Noah's birth that I never told you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What now?""
She took a shaky breath.
"When I was pregnant with Noah, your father insisted on a private medical examination. He said he wanted to make sure the baby was healthy.""
I waited.
"The results showed something unusual.""
"What?""
Danielle looked toward Officer Harris.
Then she looked back at me.
"Noah wasn't the only baby born that night.""
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
She began crying.
"I gave birth to twins.""
The room fell silent.
"Twins?"" I repeated.
Danielle nodded.
"Your father told me one of them died. He said the second baby had been born with complications.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Where is the other child?""
Danielle shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I looked again at the photograph of Lily and Noah.
Two children.
One missing for fourteen years.
One being held hostage.
And apparently, another child whose existence had been hidden from us.
Officer Harris took the phone and examined the photograph.
Then she zoomed in on the background.
A framed picture hung above the couch.
It showed Laura Mitchell holding two newborn babies.
On the back of the frame, barely visible, were two names.
*NOAH CARTER.*
*ELI CARTER.*
I stared at the second name.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a private number.
I answered.
A young male voice spoke.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Eli.""
I stopped breathing.
"I'm your son.""
There was a pause.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"And I'm the one who knows what your father did to Noah.""
