Chapter 11: The Price of My Children's Freedom

The old clinic stood at the end of a deserted road, surrounded by overgrown trees and rusting fencing.

Its windows were covered with plywood.

A faded sign hung above the entrance.

*NORTHRIDGE PRIVATE MEDICAL CENTER.*

Danielle stopped beside me.

"This is where they kept me.""

I looked at the building.

"Are you sure?""

She nodded.

"I remember every hallway.""

Officer Harris instructed us to remain behind the tactical officers.

The team moved toward the side entrance.

A few minutes later, one officer returned.

"There's movement inside.""

My heart began racing.

"Is Lily there?""

"We don't know yet.""

Danielle grabbed my hand.

"Please.""

I squeezed her fingers.

"We're bringing them home.""

The team entered.

We heard a crash.

Then a shout.

"Police! Don't move!""

I started forward, but Officer Harris blocked me.

"Stay here.""

Another shout followed.

Then a gunshot.

Danielle screamed.

I felt my blood turn cold.

A moment later, a man emerged from the building with his hands raised.

Dr. Richard Collins.

His white shirt was stained with sweat.

Officer Harris immediately approached him.

"Where are the children?""

Collins looked at me.

"Michael, you need to understand—"

"WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN?""

He swallowed.

"They're not here.""

I grabbed his shirt.

Officer Harris pulled me back.

"Mr. Carter!""

Collins adjusted his collar.

"Jonathan said he would bring them later.""

"Where is he?""

"I don't know.""

Danielle stepped forward.

"You're lying.""

Collins looked at her.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

"Danielle, I can explain.""

"You told me Michael was dead.""

"I was following instructions.""

"You signed my death certificate!""

"I had no choice.""

Danielle slapped him.

"Neither did I!""

Officers restrained Collins and searched the building.

In the underground storage room, they discovered medical files, forged identity documents, and financial records.

There were photographs of Danielle taken during her captivity.

There were records showing payments to Vanessa.

And there was a file containing both children's names.

I opened it.

The first page contained Lily's birth information.

The second contained Noah's.

The third was a legal document granting temporary control over Lily's inheritance to a company registered in Jonathan's name.

My hands began shaking.

"He was going to steal everything.""

Officer Harris examined the document.

"These signatures appear forged. We'll have them examined.""

I turned another page.

There was a photograph of Vanessa standing outside the clinic with Collins.

Behind it was a handwritten note.

Vanessa will manage the household. Keep the girl dependent. Michael must never suspect the trust is still active.

I felt sick.

Vanessa hadn't simply been cruel to Lily.

She had been deliberately placed in our home.

I continued reading.

Another note mentioned Rachel.

The boy remains useful. Keep him unaware of his biological parents until the transfer is complete.

I looked at Danielle.

"They used our children like pieces on a chessboard.""

She began crying.

Officer Harris approached with another folder.

"There's something else.""

Inside were copies of financial transfers from Jonathan's company to an account belonging to my father.

The last transfer had been made only two days earlier.

My father was alive.

And he was still receiving money.

Then a phone rang inside Collins's jacket.

An officer answered on speaker.

Jonathan's voice filled the room.

"Richard, have you got the documents?""

The officer said nothing.

Jonathan continued.

"Good. Tell Michael that if he wants his children back, he needs to bring the original trust certificate to the warehouse.""

I stepped toward the phone.

"Jonathan!""

Silence.

Then a familiar laugh.

"Michael. I was wondering when you'd show up.""

"Where are my children?""

"Safe.""

"Let me speak to them.""

"Not yet.""

I clenched my fists.

"You've destroyed my family.""

"No, Michael. Your family destroyed itself. I'm simply collecting what belongs to me.""

"Nothing belongs to you.""

Jonathan chuckled.

"Your father would disagree.""

I looked toward the officer holding the phone.

"What do you want?""

"The original trust certificate. And Danielle.""

Danielle stepped closer.

"Why me?""

Jonathan answered immediately.

"Because you're the only person who knows the second account exists.""

My stomach dropped.

"What second account?""

Danielle looked at me.

Her expression told me she knew exactly what he meant.

"Michael," she whispered, "my father didn't put all twelve million dollars into Lily's trust.""

I turned toward her.

"What are you talking about?""

"There's another inheritance. One that belongs to Noah.""

Jonathan laughed through the phone.

"Now you're getting somewhere.""

I grabbed the phone.

"If you touch my children, I swear—"

"Tomorrow morning. The warehouse. Bring Danielle and the certificate.""

Then he added something that made my hands go numb.

"And Michael? Your father will be there too.""

The call ended.

I looked at Danielle.

"What's in Noah's trust?""

She swallowed.

"Twenty-eight million dollars.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Officer Harris closed the folder.

"We need to secure both children immediately. And we need to find your father.""

I nodded.

But before we could leave, one of the investigators approached.

"Officer, we found a hidden room.""

He held up a photograph.

It showed a small bedroom containing a bed, toys, and a framed family picture.

I recognized the people in it.

My father.

My sister.

And a teenage boy.

Noah.

But there was someone else standing behind them.

A woman I had never seen before.

May you like

Under the photograph was a handwritten label.

The real mother.
