Chapter 9: The Video That Exposed Them

For three seconds, I couldn’t understand what Olivia had said.

Someone recorded it.

The kitchen.

Mia crying.

Patricia grabbing her.

Everything.

A video.

My first thought was relief.

Finally.

Proof.

Then another thought came.

Why would anyone record it?

“Who had the camera?””

Olivia was quiet.

“We don’t know yet.””

I stood by the window.

The world outside looked normal.

People walking.

Cars driving.

Neighbors living their lives.

Nobody knew my family had fallen apart behind closed doors.

“Can you get the video?””

“We’re trying.””

“What happens if we do?””

“Then everything changes.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything changes.

Those words felt dangerous.

Because part of me wanted justice.

But another part of me was scared.

What if Daniel really was involved?

What if the person I loved had watched my daughter suffer and done nothing?

That afternoon, Daniel came to pick up some clothes.

I watched him enter the bedroom.

The place where we had built our life.

He looked uncomfortable.

Good.

He should.

When he came downstairs, I was waiting.

“You knew.””

He stopped.

“About what?””

“The video.””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You knew someone recorded what happened.””

Daniel looked away.

“Emma.””

“Answer me.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“When did you know?””

“Afterward.””

“Afterward?””

I laughed.

“You found out someone recorded your mother hurting our daughter and you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to handle it.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control it.””

Daniel looked angry.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me why you protected them.””

His expression broke.

“I didn’t want everything destroyed.””

I stared at him.

“Everything?””

I pointed upstairs.

“You mean your reputation?””

“No.””

“Your mother?””

“No.””

“Lauren?””

He flinched.

And that was my answer.

I stepped closer.

“You were willing to lose us to protect them.””

Daniel whispered:

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“You keep calling them mistakes because the truth sounds worse.””

He looked at me.

“What truth?””

“That you chose.””

The words hung between us.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Patricia.

He answered.

“Mom?””

I watched his face change.

Fear.

Confusion.

Then panic.

“What do you mean?””

A pause.

“No, she doesn’t have it.””

My heart started racing.

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear of his own mother.

“Mom, listen to me.””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“You told me there was no evidence.””

My body went cold.

Evidence.

The word confirmed everything.

Daniel hung up.

I stared at him.

“She told you there was no evidence?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What evidence, Daniel?””

His face turned pale.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One video attachment.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my kitchen.

The angle was from behind a cabinet.

I watched Patricia walk toward Mia.

I watched myself run downstairs.

Then I heard something I never heard before.

Something that changed everything.

Before Patricia grabbed Mia, she wasn’t alone.

Someone else was in the room.

Someone behind the camera.

And then a voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that made me drop my phone.

It was Daniel.

May you like

And he said:

“Mom, wait. Don’t do anything until I turn the camera on.””
