Chapter 8: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the document on my phone.
My name was there.
My signature.
My information.
But I had never seen that paper before.
I called Olivia immediately.
“It’s fake.””
Her voice was firm.
“Yes.””
The word gave me a strange kind of relief.
Not because the situation was better.
Because I finally knew I wasn’t imagining everything.
“They created a document using your identity,” Olivia explained.
“What document?””
“A statement claiming you agreed to move out and leave Mia’s primary care with Daniel.””
My hands went cold.
“They were planning to take my daughter.””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Mia was upstairs watching cartoons at my sister’s house.
Safe.
For now.
I whispered:
“I can’t believe this.””
Olivia’s voice softened.
“Emma, I need you to listen carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“Do not confront Patricia or Lauren alone.””
“Why?””
“Because people who create false evidence usually don’t stop when they get caught.””
I knew she was right.
But there was something I needed to know.
“Who made the fake document?””
“We’re investigating.””
“Can you find out?””
“Yes.””
After hanging up, I sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where Patricia had thrown those papers.
The same table where she had looked at my daughter and decided she wasn’t enough.
I heard the door open.
My sister, Ava, walked in with Mia.
“Mommy!””
Mia ran toward me.
I dropped down and held her.
Her small arms wrapped around my neck.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
“Did you have fun with Aunt Ava?””
She nodded.
“We made cookies.””
I smiled.
“That sounds amazing.””
Then her smile faded.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Is Grandma still mad at me?””
My heart broke.
I held her face gently.
“Baby, Grandma’s feelings are not your fault.””
“But she said I don’t belong.””
I swallowed hard.
“You belong everywhere you are loved.””
Mia looked at me.
“Do you love me?””
I pulled her closer.
“More than anything.””
That night, after Mia fell asleep, Ava sat beside me.
“She shouldn’t have to ask that.””
I wiped my eyes.
“I know.””
Ava looked at me.
“What are you going to do?””
I looked at the documents spread across the table.
The fake signature.
The bank records.
The messages.
“I’m going to fight.””
Ava nodded.
“Good.””
The next morning, Olivia called.
“I found something.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“The fake custody document came from Patricia’s company.””
I closed my eyes.
“So she did it.””
“Yes.””
“Can we prove Daniel was involved?””
There was silence.
Then Olivia said:
“Maybe.””
“Maybe?””
“There is one problem.””
“What?””
“The document was created from Daniel’s computer.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stood.
“Daniel wouldn’t.””
But even as I said it, I knew.
The man I thought I knew had already done things I never imagined.
Olivia continued.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“We found a hidden folder.””
“On his computer?””
“Yes.””
“What’s inside?””
She paused.
Then:
“Photos.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of photos?””
“Emma…”
Her voice became quieter.
“They were taking pictures of you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Not normal pictures.””
A chill moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
“They photographed moments where you looked upset, tired, or overwhelmed.””
I couldn’t speak.
“They were building a story.””
A story where I was the problem.
A story where they were the victims.
Then Olivia said the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“There’s one photo from the day Patricia hurt Mia.””
I held my breath.
“What photo?””
“Emma…”
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“Someone recorded the entire thing.””
