Chapter 4: The Face From My Past
I stared at the photo on my phone until my fingers went numb.
Daniel.
Patricia.
And the woman standing beside them with a confident smile.
A woman I had spent years trying to forget.
Lauren.
My old best friend.
The person who knew every secret I had ever shared.
The person who held my hand when I found out I was pregnant with Mia.
The person who cried with me when Daniel proposed.
And now she was standing beside my husband like she had always belonged there.
I felt sick.
Another message appeared.
*Unknown:* “You deserve to know the truth. Meet me tomorrow. Come alone.””
I looked around my empty living room.
The house felt different.
Not because Daniel was gone.
Because I finally saw it clearly.
The walls held years of memories that might have been built on lies.
The next morning, I met the sender at a quiet coffee shop across town.
I almost walked past her.
She looked older.
Tired.
Like carrying a secret had aged her.
“Emma?””
I stopped.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked down.
“My name is Rachel. I worked with Daniel.””
I sat across from her.
“Why did you send me that photo?””
Rachel wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
“Because I saw what they were planning.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who?””
“Daniel and his mother.””
I leaned forward.
“Planning what?””
Rachel looked toward the window.
“Replacing you.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
“Replacing me?””
She nodded.
“Daniel didn’t just start seeing Lauren. He started building a new life with her.””
My hands curled into fists.
“For how long?””
“About eleven months.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Almost exactly when he started acting different.””
Rachel looked guilty.
“There’s more.””
I waited.
She pulled a folder from her bag and placed it on the table.
“I found these in Daniel’s office.””
I opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
The first one was between Daniel and Patricia.
My eyes moved across the page.
*She needs to understand that this family has standards.*
My stomach twisted.
The next line was worse.
*Lauren is everything this family needs. Educated. Successful. The right background.*
I closed my eyes.
The right background.
A phrase people used when they wanted to hide what they really meant.
Rachel watched me carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked up.
“Why are you helping me?””
She hesitated.
“Because I ignored it for too long.””
“What do you mean?””
Rachel looked down.
“I heard Daniel and Patricia talking months ago. They were discussing custody.””
My heart stopped.
“Custody?””
She nodded.
“They wanted to make you look unstable.””
I stared at her.
“They were going to take Mia from me?””
“They said if they could prove you were angry or aggressive, they could argue that you created conflict in the home.””
I remembered the kitchen.
Patricia attacking my daughter.
Then I remembered myself pushing her away.
My chest tightened.
“They were setting me up.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s why I contacted you.””
I looked at the documents again.
The betrayal felt heavier than anger.
Because Daniel wasn’t just leaving.
He had been preparing.
“Why Lauren?””
Rachel was silent for a moment.
Then she answered.
“Because she agreed with Patricia.””
My throat tightened.
“What?””
“She told Daniel that Mia would have fewer struggles if she looked more like his family.””
The coffee shop noise disappeared.
People laughed at nearby tables.
Cars passed outside.
But all I could hear was that sentence.
Mia would have fewer struggles.
As if my daughter was the problem.
As if the world needed to change her instead of protecting her.
I stood up.
“I need to go.””
Rachel grabbed her bag.
“Emma.””
I stopped.
“You need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows you found out.””
I froze.
“How?””
Rachel looked at her phone.
Then she showed me a message.
From Daniel.
*Find out if Emma contacted Rachel.*
My blood turned cold.
He was watching me.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Then answered.
“What?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
I looked out the window.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“Because I think we need to talk about what happened last night.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What happened?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I know you found out about Lauren.””
And suddenly I realized something.
May you like
He wasn’t calling to explain.
He was calling because he was afraid.
