Chapter 11: The Folder With My Name
The folder was ordinary.
Brown.
Thin.
Almost impossible to notice.
But my name was written across the front.
Emma Carter.
I stared at it.
“Pause.””
Olivia stopped the video.
“What is it?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel was still on the phone.
“Emma?””
I put him on speaker.
“Did you know about a folder?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My entire body went cold.
“You knew.””
“Emma, listen—”
“No.””
I stood.
“You knew there was a folder with my name on it.””
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“I didn’t know what was inside.””
“But you knew it existed.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Olivia.
She was already taking notes.
“What was in it?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then why was my name on it?””
Daniel breathed heavily.
“My mother collected things.””
“Things?””
“Information.””
I laughed quietly.
“This is my life.””
I pointed at the screen.
“My daughter.””
“My marriage.””
“My private moments.””
“And you’re calling it information?””
Daniel said nothing.
I ended the call.
Olivia looked at me.
“We need to get that folder.””
“How?””
“Legally.””
I nodded.
For the first time in days, I felt something stronger than pain.
Direction.
I was done reacting.
Now I was moving.
That evening, Olivia helped me prepare everything.
Bank records.
Messages.
The video.
The fake custody document.
Every piece of evidence.
But something bothered me.
The folder.
Why was Patricia so desperate to hide it?
The next morning, Olivia called.
“We found a way.””
I sat up.
“Found what?””
“A copy.””
“Of the folder?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She paused.
“From someone inside Patricia’s company.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
“A former employee.””
An hour later, I met the woman.
Her name was Natalie.
She looked nervous.
“I shouldn’t be doing this.””
“Why are you?””
She looked at me.
“Because I have a daughter too.””
That answer told me everything.
She handed me a flash drive.
“This is a copy of the files Patricia kept.””
I looked at it.
“What’s on it?””
Natalie swallowed.
“Everything.””
I plugged it into my laptop.
Folders appeared.
Dates.
Documents.
Photos.
My hands trembled as I opened the first file.
It was a report.
About me.
My job.
My finances.
My family.
Then I opened another.
A list of “concerns.””
Concern:
*Emma is too emotional.*
Concern:
*Emma has difficulty controlling anger.*
Concern:
*Emma may create conflict in front of the child.*
I felt sick.
They weren’t documenting reality.
They were creating a story.
Then I opened the last folder.
The title made my breath stop.
*Lauren Carter.*
Carter.
Not Lauren’s real last name.
Mine.
I clicked.
Inside were documents.
Pictures.
Messages.
And one file dated six months earlier.
A marriage application.
My hands froze.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t speak.
Olivia leaned closer.
“What is it?””
I turned the screen toward her.
Her expression changed.
Because the document showed something impossible.
Lauren wasn’t just Daniel’s affair partner.
May you like
She had already planned to become his wife.
Six months before Daniel told me he wanted a divorce.
