Chapter 2: The Papers On The Counter

I stared at the documents until the words stopped making sense.

My daughter was still wrapped around my neck, her tiny fingers gripping my shirt.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

The first page had my husband Daniel’s signature.

At the bottom was a heading that made my vision blur.

Separation Agreement.

I looked at Patricia.

“No.””

She leaned against the counter.

“Yes.””

“No, Daniel would never do this.””

Patricia gave a small laugh.

“You really don’t know your husband.””

I hated that sentence.

Because a small part of me wondered if she was right.

Daniel had changed.

Not overnight.

Slowly.

Quietly.

At first, it was little things.

He stopped coming to Mia’s school events.

He stopped asking about her day.

He started working late more often.

Whenever I asked what was wrong, he would kiss my forehead and say the same thing.

“Everything is fine.””

But everything had not been fine.

I looked down at the papers again.

“Where is Daniel?””

Patricia shrugged.

“Probably on his way home.””

“Why would he send these through you?””

“Because he knew you would make a scene.””

My anger rose.

“A scene?””

I pointed toward Mia.

“My daughter was just attacked by you.””

Patricia’s face hardened.

“She is dramatic because you raised her to be.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.

Mia covered her ears.

“Mommy, I want to go.””

My heart shattered.

I kissed her hair.

“We’re leaving.””

Patricia laughed.

“Leaving where?””

I looked at her.

“Anywhere away from you.””

She stepped closer.

“You think Daniel will choose you?””

I said nothing.

“You think he wants a life where he has to explain why his children don’t fit with his family?””

I felt sick.

Because those words were not new.

I had heard pieces of them before.

Not from Patricia.

From silence.

From the uncomfortable pauses when strangers asked Daniel about Mia.

From the way he avoided correcting people when they assumed Mia was adopted.

From every moment I had convinced myself I was imagining things.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Daniel.

My hands shook as I answered.

“Daniel?””

There was silence.

Then his voice.

“Are you home?””

I looked at Mia.

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“Is my mother there?””

I froze.

“You know she’s here?””

Patricia smiled.

Daniel exhaled.

“Listen, Emma, I need you to stay calm.””

Those words made my stomach drop.

“Why?””

“Because we need to talk.””

“We?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the papers.

“About the separation agreement?””

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

My throat tightened.

“You knew.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew what your mother did to Mia?””

“I didn’t know it would happen like this.””

Like this.

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not “Is Mia okay?””

Like this.

I closed my eyes.

“Daniel, our daughter is crying because your mother told her she was trash.””

His voice became quieter.

“She shouldn’t have said that.””

“Shouldn’t have?””

I felt my hands shaking.

“She hurt our child.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

There was another silence.

Then Daniel said the sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Maybe this proves we all need a fresh start.””

I looked at Mia.

My little girl.

The child he once held the day she was born.

The child whose first steps he recorded.

The child who used to call him her hero.

“Are you leaving us?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

I ended the call.

Patricia picked up her purse.

“You should have listened when I warned you.””

I looked at her.

“What warning?””

She smiled.

“The one where I told you my son would eventually realize he married the wrong woman.””

Then she walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she stopped.

“Oh, and Emma?””

I stared at her.

“The woman he’s been seeing is waiting for him.””

My blood ran cold.

“What woman?””

Patricia opened the door.

“The one who gives him the family he always wanted.””

May you like

And then she left me standing there with my daughter in my arms and a question I was terrified to ask.

Who had my husband been planning a new life with?
