Chapter 6: The Account That Changed Everything
I spent the entire night searching.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
Daniel had spent months making me feel like I was the problem.
Like I was too emotional.
Too angry.
Too difficult.
But now I knew.
There was a reason he wanted me confused.
Confused people don’t fight back.
The next morning, I called my attorney.
Her name was Olivia.
She had helped my sister through a difficult divorce years earlier.
When I explained what happened, she became silent.
Then she asked:
“Emma, do you have access to your financial records?””
“Yes.””
“Check everything.””
I opened our bank accounts.
At first, everything looked normal.
Mortgage.
Bills.
Groceries.
Then I found it.
A transfer.
A large one.
My hands shook.
I called Olivia immediately.
“Daniel moved money.””
“How much?””
I told her.
There was silence.
“Emma, when was this?””
“Three weeks ago.””
She exhaled.
“That’s important.””
“Why?””
“Because if he moved shared assets while preparing separation, we need documentation.””
I looked at the number on the screen.
The money wasn’t just money.
It was security.
The savings we built after years of working.
The money we planned to use for Mia’s future.
I heard the front door open.
I froze.
Daniel.
I walked downstairs.
He stopped when he saw my face.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
“Why did you move our money?””
His expression changed instantly.
“I was going to explain.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When you were already gone?””
“Emma, it wasn’t like that.””
“Then tell me what it was like.””
He looked exhausted.
“I needed protection.””
“From who?””
His eyes moved away.
I knew.
“From me?””
“No.””
“From my daughter?””
“No.””
“Then from who?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
I stepped closer.
“Your mother told you to do this.””
His silence confirmed it.
I laughed softly.
“I spent years defending you.””
Daniel looked at me.
“And you were preparing to destroy me.””
“I wasn’t trying to destroy you.””
“You just made sure you were safe before leaving.””
He looked ashamed.
But shame wasn’t enough anymore.
Not after Mia.
Not after Lauren.
Not after everything.
Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go cold.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Lauren isn’t just someone I’m seeing.””
I waited.
“She’s pregnant.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“Pregnant?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward the room where my daughter slept.
The little girl who thought her family was permanent.
The little girl who still asked when Daddy was coming home.
“How long have you known?””
Daniel looked down.
“Three months.””
Three months.
He had known for three months.
Three months while pretending everything was normal.
Three months while hugging Mia goodbye every morning.
Three months while planning a new family behind our backs.
I walked to the door.
“Emma.””
I turned.
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
“What are you going to do?””
I looked at the man I once trusted more than anyone.
Then I answered:
“I’m going to make sure my daughter never has to wonder if she deserves to be loved again.””
I opened the door.
But before I stepped outside, my phone rang.
Olivia.
I answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Emma, I found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The money Daniel transferred wasn’t for Lauren.””
My heart started racing.
“Then who was it for?””
Olivia lowered her voice.
“It was connected to Patricia.””
And suddenly I realized.
May you like
Daniel wasn’t just following his mother’s plan.
He was hiding something much bigger.
