Chapter 5: The Truth He Tried To Hide

Daniel asked me to meet him at the park where we used to take Mia on Sunday mornings.

The choice felt cruel.

That place was filled with memories.

Mia learning to ride a bicycle.

Daniel pushing her on the swing.

The three of us sharing ice cream under the trees.

A perfect picture.

A picture that no longer existed.

When I arrived, Daniel was sitting on a bench.

He looked nervous.

Good.

For once, I wanted him to feel something.

He stood when he saw me.

“Emma.””

I stayed several feet away.

“Say what you need to say.””

He looked down.

“I know you’re angry.””

I laughed.

“Angry?””

I pointed toward him.

“My daughter was hurt by your mother.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“And you cheated on me.””

“I know.””

“And you planned to leave us.””

His silence was enough.

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say you know.””

Daniel sat back down.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.””

I stepped closer.

“This was a choice.””

He looked away.

“I felt like I was losing myself.””

I stared at him.

“While raising our daughter?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel didn’t hate being a father.

He hated that being a father connected him to a life his mother didn’t approve of.

“I loved you,” he said quietly.

“Did you?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let your mother treat Mia like she wasn’t human?””

His eyes dropped.

“I should have stopped her.””

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“You should have.””

The honesty in my own words surprised me.

Because that was the wound that hurt most.

Not Patricia.

Daniel.

The person who was supposed to stand between us and anyone who wanted to hurt us.

“I was afraid,” he admitted.

I looked at him.

“Afraid of what?””

“My family.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You were afraid of them, so you let them hurt us?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You don’t understand how my mother is.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I understand exactly how she is.””

A long silence passed.

Then Daniel said something I wasn’t expecting.

“She told me something about Mia.””

My body went still.

“What?””

“She said if we divorced, she would make sure I got custody.””

I felt cold.

“She threatened you?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said she had connections.””

I looked at him carefully.

“Did you believe her?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“You believed she could take my daughter.””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

I stepped back.

“You chose the easiest option.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I chose what I thought was best.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You chose what was best for you.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

I watched his expression change.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Who is it?””

“No one.””

I held out my hand.

“Give me the phone.””

“Emma.””

“Give me the phone.””

He refused.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever was on that screen mattered.

I stepped forward.

“Daniel, if there is nothing to hide, show me.””

His face hardened.

“I said no.””

I stared at him.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time, I saw the preview.

A message from Lauren.

*Did she find out about the money?*

My heart stopped.

“What money?””

Daniel went completely silent.

I looked at him.

“What money, Daniel?””

He stood quickly.

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

My voice dropped.

“What money?””

He reached for his phone.

Too late.

The message disappeared.

But I had already seen enough.

Because this was never just about leaving me.

May you like

It was about taking something.

And I was about to find out exactly what they had been hiding.
