Chapter 7: The Secret Agreement
I sat in my car outside my house for almost twenty minutes after Olivia’s call.
The engine was off.
The rain tapped against the windshield.
But I couldn’t move.
The same house that once felt like my safest place now felt like a crime scene.
Every room held a memory.
Mia’s first steps in the living room.
Daniel painting her bedroom walls.
Family dinners where I thought we were building something permanent.
Now I wondered how many moments had been fake.
I called Olivia back.
“Tell me exactly what you found.””
Her voice was calm, but I could hear the seriousness behind it.
“The money Daniel transferred wasn’t moved into a personal account.””
“Then where did it go?””
“An account connected to a company.””
“What company?””
She paused.
“Patricia owns it.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
“Why would Daniel move our money into his mother’s company?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“Can he do that legally?””
“That depends on the details. But Emma, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your husband wasn’t preparing for a divorce. He was preparing for a fight.””
Those words stayed with me.
A fight.
Against me.
Against the mother of his child.
Against the woman who had spent years standing beside him.
I walked into the house.
Daniel was sitting at the kitchen table.
The same table where Mia used to draw pictures.
He looked up.
“You talked to someone.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“Your face.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He sighed.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I placed my phone on the table.
“Patricia’s company received money from our account.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You looked into that?””
“You mean I discovered it.””
He stood.
“Listen to me.””
“No. You listen.””
My voice shook.
“You moved our savings.””
“I was trying to protect us.””
“Protect who?””
He said nothing.
“Not me.””
I pointed upstairs.
“Not Mia.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
Daniel walked toward me.
“My mother had a plan.””
I froze.
Finally.
The truth.
“What plan?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“She said if things got complicated, she could help me.””
“Help you?””
I laughed.
“She attacked our daughter.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel. You don’t get to say that anymore.””
He flinched.
I continued.
“She hurt Mia because of who she is. And instead of protecting your child, you protected your relationship with your mother.””
Daniel looked down.
“I was wrong.””
The apology came too late.
But I needed answers.
“What did Patricia promise you?””
He was silent.
Then:
“A house.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She said if I left and started over, she would help me financially.””
My stomach turned.
“So this was a deal.””
“No.””
“It was.””
Daniel looked angry.
“I didn’t leave you for money.””
“Then why was money part of the plan?””
He had no answer.
I walked away.
But before I reached the stairs, Daniel spoke.
“There’s something else.””
I stopped.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Patricia has been collecting information about you.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“What kind of information?””
“Everything.””
I turned around.
“What does that mean?””
“She wanted proof that you were unstable.””
My heart dropped.
The threats.
The custody.
The money.
It all connected.
“She was building a case.””
Daniel nodded.
“And she wasn’t doing it alone.””
I stared at him.
“Who else?””
His face changed.
Like he already regretted saying too much.
“Daniel.””
He whispered:
“Lauren.””
The room went silent.
My husband’s affair partner.
My former best friend.
The woman who wanted my family.
They weren’t just taking Daniel away.
They were trying to erase me.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Olivia.
Attached was a document.
I opened it.
My hands started shaking.
Because at the bottom of the page was a signature.
May you like
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
