Chapter 10: The Recording That Broke My Heart
I replayed the video three times.
Then four.
Then I couldn’t watch anymore.
Because every time I heard Daniel’s voice, a different memory appeared.
The day he held Mia for the first time.
The night we brought her home from the hospital.
The way he used to whisper, “My little girl,” while she slept on his chest.
All those moments crashed against the truth.
He had known.
He had planned.
He had watched.
I sat on the edge of the couch, staring at the frozen screen.
Daniel stood across the room.
Silent.
Waiting.
“Say something.””
His face was pale.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to start with my name.””
He swallowed.
“I can explain.””
I laughed.
That laugh didn’t even sound like me.
“Explain what?””
I held up my phone.
“Explain why you needed a camera before your mother hurt our daughter?””
Daniel looked down.
“I didn’t know she was going to do that.””
“Then why record?””
He had no answer.
And that was the worst part.
Because silence was no longer uncertainty.
It was confirmation.
“You knew something was going to happen.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“My mother wanted proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He didn’t respond.
I stepped closer.
“Proof that I would react?””
His eyes moved away.
My stomach dropped.
“They wanted to make me look dangerous.””
Daniel whispered:
“She said it would help with custody.””
The room went cold.
I stared at him.
“You let your mother set me up.””
“I didn’t think it would go this far.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“You didn’t think?””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“She is five years old.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You know her birthday. You know her favorite food. You know the song she sings before bed.””
I stepped back.
“But you don’t know what it feels like to watch your child beg someone to stop hurting her.””
Daniel looked broken.
For a second, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered Mia’s question.
Why does Grandma hate my skin?
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you ever defend her?””
He said nothing.
That answer destroyed the last piece of love I was holding onto.
The next morning, Olivia arrived with printed documents.
She placed them on the table.
“The video changes everything.””
I looked at her.
“Can it prove what happened?””
“Yes.””
She opened the folder.
“But there’s more.””
“What?””
“Daniel’s messages.””
My chest tightened.
“What messages?””
She handed me copies.
The first one was between Daniel and Patricia.
*We need something undeniable. Emma always looks like the victim.*
My hands shook.
The next message was worse.
*Once the court sees how emotional she gets, custody won’t be difficult.*
I stopped reading.
Olivia watched me carefully.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
“How long?””
“How long what?””
“How long have they been planning this?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Months.””
Months.
My marriage had become a trap.
I had been sleeping beside someone who was collecting evidence against me.
That afternoon, Daniel called.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
“Why are you calling?””
His voice sounded exhausted.
“I need to talk.””
“You’ve done enough talking.””
“Emma, please.””
I stayed silent.
Then he said:
“My mother lied to me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She told me she only wanted to scare you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you believed her?””
“I didn’t know.””
“You never know.””
The silence hurt.
Then Daniel said:
“She has something else.””
My body went still.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
“She called me this morning. She was angry.””
“Why?””
“She said you weren’t supposed to find the video.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why?””
Daniel whispered:
“Because there was something on it she didn’t want anyone to see.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Another silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Emma, you need to watch the entire recording.””
I looked at Olivia.
She nodded slowly.
The video we had seen was only a small piece.
A clip.
Not the whole truth.
I opened the file again.
This time, I moved the timeline back.
And as the camera angle changed, I saw something behind Patricia.
Something sitting on the counter.
May you like
A folder.
With my name written on it.
