Chapter 12: The Plan Before The Betrayal

The marriage application sat on my screen like a nightmare.

Lauren Carter.

Daniel Carter.

A future that existed before my marriage was even over.

I stared at the date.

Six months earlier.

Six months before Patricia attacked Mia.

Six months before Daniel admitted there was someone else.

Six months before I realized my family was falling apart.

They had already decided.

They had already replaced me.

Olivia looked through the documents.

“This is important.””

I barely heard her.

“How could they?””

My voice was quiet.

“How could they look at me every day?””

Olivia didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

Some betrayals are too cruel to explain.

I scrolled through the files.

There were messages between Patricia and Lauren.

One stood out.

*Once Emma is removed, Daniel can finally have the family he deserves.*

My hands tightened around the laptop.

Removed.

Not divorced.

Removed.

Like I was an obstacle.

Like I was something to erase.

Then I found another message.

This one was from Lauren.

*I can handle being patient. I know how to make him choose me.*

My stomach turned.

I closed the laptop.

“I need air.””

Outside, the wind was cold.

I stood on the porch and looked at the house.

The same house where I had imagined growing old.

The same house where I thought Mia would bring her children someday.

Now it felt like a place where everyone had been pretending.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“Emma, I know.””

I froze.

“You know what?””

“That you found the files.””

I looked around.

“How?””

“Lauren told me.””

My heart sank.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Of course she did.””

Daniel sighed.

“I didn’t know about the marriage papers.””

I almost laughed.

“You didn’t know she planned your future?””

“I swear.””

I closed my eyes.

“Daniel, do you hear yourself?””

Silence.

“You keep telling me what you didn’t know.””

My voice became sharper.

“But you never tell me what you did.””

He didn’t respond.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

The words felt empty.

I had waited years to hear them.

Now they meant nothing.

“You’re sorry because you got caught.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Because I lost my family.””

I looked back at the house.

“No.””

I said it quietly.

“You didn’t lose us.””

A tear fell down my face.

“You traded us.””

The call went silent.

Then Daniel said:

“There’s something you need to know about Lauren.””

I almost ended the call.

But something stopped me.

“What?””

“She wasn’t the one who contacted Patricia first.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She didn’t start this.””

“Then who did?””

A long pause.

Then he answered.

“My mother.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“What?””

“Patricia approached Lauren.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Because she had been looking for someone to replace you.””

The words hurt.

But they also explained everything.

Patricia didn’t discover Lauren.

She chose her.

She built the plan.

She created the opening.

And Daniel let it happen.

Then Daniel said something else.

Something that changed the entire story.

“Emma, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“My mother wasn’t just trying to destroy your marriage.””

I waited.

“She was trying to hide what she did years ago.””

I frowned.

“What did she do?””

Daniel’s breathing became uneven.

“I found old records.””

“What records?””

A pause.

Then:

“About Mia’s birth.””

My heart stopped.

“Daniel.””

“I think my mother has been hiding something about the day Mia was born.””

I gripped the phone.

“What kind of something?””

His voice became barely a whisper.

“Emma…”

May you like

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She may have tried to make sure Mia was never part of our family.””
