Chapter 9: The Baby Was Never Supposed to Be Grayson's
My mother had always told me that she wanted grandchildren.
At Christmas dinners, she complained about empty nursery rooms.
At family weddings, she asked when Grayson and I planned to start a family.
She had even bought a tiny silver baby bracelet two years earlier.
I remembered laughing when she showed it to me.
I had thought she was simply impatient to become a grandmother.
Now I understood that the bracelet might have been purchased for an entirely different reason.
I stared at her.
"You created an embryo?""
Margaret sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
"Your father and Richard wanted to preserve the family interests.""
"By using your eggs?""
She nodded.
"And Richard's genetic material.""
Grayson looked horrified.
"My father?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
Daniel took several steps backward.
"So Vanessa is carrying a child genetically related to our father?""
"That's what the records indicate," Martin replied carefully.
Grayson ran a hand through his hair.
"Why?""
My mother finally looked up.
"Because Richard believed the two families needed an heir who would connect them permanently.""
I felt nauseated.
"You agreed to this?""
"At the time, I believed it was the right thing to do.""
"Did my father know?""
Margaret looked away.
"He knew about the arrangement.""
I shook my head.
"Then why did he write me that letter?""
"Because he changed his mind.""
Martin nodded.
"Robert discovered the arrangement shortly before his death. He believed it had been improperly established and instructed me to investigate.""
I looked at the attorney.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because the original records disappeared. I spent years trying to locate them. Your mother had access to the medical and financial files.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"I didn't know all of this when I agreed to carry the embryo.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Then what did you know?""
"Margaret told me I would receive money for helping her complete a private family arrangement. She said I would carry a baby for someone who couldn't safely carry a pregnancy.""
My mother shook her head.
"You signed the agreement.""
"Because you told me it was legal!""
Vanessa pulled a folded paper from her purse.
"I have the contract.""
Martin took it.
He read the first page, then the second.
His expression became increasingly troubled.
"This isn't a standard surrogacy agreement.""
Grayson leaned forward.
"Explain.""
"The document identifies Margaret as the genetic mother and Richard Hale as the genetic father. Vanessa is listed as the gestational carrier.""
Daniel sat down heavily.
"So the baby is our father's biological child.""
Martin nodded.
"But there is something else.""
He turned to the final page.
The contract contained an additional clause.
If the child was born alive, a trust would transfer substantial ownership interests to the child.
Grayson read the amount.
"Thirty percent?""
Martin nodded.
"Thirty percent of Northbridge Holdings.""
I looked at my mother.
"How much is that worth?""
Grayson answered quietly.
"At least sixty million dollars.""
The room fell silent.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The fake paternity claim.
The photograph.
The money paid to Daniel.
The forged signatures.
Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to become my husband's mistress.
She had been placed in the middle of a complicated inheritance scheme.
And the baby was the key.
But one question remained.
"Why did you tell everyone Grayson was the father?"" I asked.
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Because the trust documents required the child to be publicly connected to the Hale family.""
"But the child already was.""
"Not legally. The original arrangement had been concealed. Margaret wanted Grayson to acknowledge the pregnancy publicly before anyone questioned the medical records.""
Grayson looked at his mother-in-law.
"You wanted me to accept responsibility for my father's child?""
Margaret raised her chin.
"You were going to inherit the company anyway.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"Your father believed this child was important.""
Grayson laughed without humor.
"My father has been dead for four years.""
"His wishes didn't die with him.""
Martin interrupted.
"Actually, they may have.""
He opened another document from his briefcase.
"Robert and Richard established a condition in the original trust. Any attempt to create a false paternity claim or conceal the child's genetic origins would automatically suspend the transfer of ownership.""
My mother went completely still.
"What?""
Martin looked at her.
"The agreement was designed to protect the child from being used as a financial instrument.""
Daniel shook his head.
"So if the public announcement was false...""
"The trust could be frozen," Martin replied.
Grayson stared at Vanessa.
"Did you know about this clause?""
She shook her head.
"Margaret told me everything was already arranged.""
My mother suddenly stood.
"Martin, you cannot freeze the trust.""
"I haven't frozen anything yet.""
"Then don't.""
He closed the folder.
"That decision will depend on what the independent investigation discovers.""
Margaret turned toward me.
"Claire, please. You need to understand. I was trying to protect your future.""
I looked at her.
"You used my inheritance to finance a pregnancy involving your own genetic material. You forged my husband's signature. You paid Vanessa to lie about the baby's father. And you made me believe my marriage was falling apart.""
"I did what I had to do.""
"No. You did what you wanted.""
She reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
For the first time, my mother looked genuinely desperate.
"Claire, don't destroy this family.""
I looked at her.
"You already did.""
Martin began gathering the documents.
"There's one final matter we need to address tonight.""
He removed a sealed medical envelope.
It had been attached to the original fertility agreement.
"The clinic conducted preliminary genetic testing before the embryo transfer. The results were supposed to remain confidential until the birth.""
Grayson frowned.
"Why do you have them?""
"Because someone sent them to my office anonymously yesterday.""
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a genetic relationship report.
Martin read it twice.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"There's a discrepancy.""
Daniel frowned.
"What kind of discrepancy?""
Martin placed the report on the table.
"The embryo's recorded genetic father is Richard Hale.""
Grayson nodded slowly.
"That's what we've just established.""
Martin shook his head.
"Yes. But the pregnancy records Vanessa provided contain a different genetic profile.""
Vanessa stopped breathing.
My mother gripped the back of a chair.
Martin continued.
"According to this report, the embryo transferred to Vanessa was not the embryo described in the original agreement.""
I stared at him.
"Then whose embryo is she carrying?""
Martin looked directly at Vanessa.
"That's what the independent laboratory needs to establish.""
Vanessa suddenly began sobbing.
Margaret whispered something I couldn't hear.
Then Grayson took the report and read the final paragraph.
His face went completely white.
Because the document contained one more name.
Not Richard Hale.
Not Grayson Hale.
Not Daniel Hale.
May you like
It was the name of a man who had supposedly died before Vanessa ever became pregnant.
And according to the laboratory's preliminary findings, that man was still alive.
