Chapter 2: The Photograph That Exposed Her

Daniel had never been particularly good at hiding his emotions.

Unlike Grayson, who could sit through a hostile business negotiation without changing his expression, Daniel wore every thought on his face.

That night, he looked terrified.

He walked through the ballroom while six hundred guests watched him.

Vanessa stepped backward.

"Daniel, don't.""

He ignored her.

Grayson descended from the stage.

"What's going on?""

Daniel glanced at his older brother.

"I think you should ask her.""

Grayson looked at Vanessa.

"Ask her what?""

Vanessa quickly wiped her eyes.

"Nothing. He's upset because I wouldn't continue seeing him.""

The words landed like a slap.

Daniel stopped walking.

"That's interesting.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You're embarrassing yourself.""

Daniel held up the envelope.

"Then perhaps you can explain this.""

Grayson took a step forward.

"Daniel, what is it?""

His younger brother looked at me first.

"Claire, I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner.""

My stomach tightened.

"Tell me what?""

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, bank transfer records, and a photograph of a document bearing Vanessa's signature.

Grayson took the first page.

His expression hardened.

"What am I looking at?""

"An agreement," Daniel replied.

"One that Vanessa wanted me to sign.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"That's private correspondence!""

Daniel looked at her.

"You sent it to my business email. You included a payment schedule. And you asked me to transfer five million dollars into an account in the Cayman Islands.""

Several guests gasped.

Grayson read the document again.

"Why would you offer Daniel five million dollars?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"I didn't.""

Daniel pointed to the signature.

"Then whose handwriting is this?""

I leaned closer.

The document contained three paragraphs.

Vanessa would publicly identify Grayson as the father of her unborn child.

In exchange, she would receive five million dollars.

The agreement also included a confidentiality clause preventing her from discussing the arrangement with the press.

But the signature at the bottom wasn't Vanessa's.

It wasn't Daniel's either.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother's.

Margaret Bennett.

My mother had signed her name in the same distinctive way she'd signed every birthday card, school form, and legal document since I was a child.

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

"Where did you get this?"" I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

"An attorney sent it to me yesterday. He represents someone who was involved in preparing the agreement.""

"Who?""

"One of Vanessa's former business managers.""

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the papers.

"Give those back!""

Daniel pulled them away.

"Don't touch me.""

Grayson grabbed his brother's arm.

"Explain why my wife's mother is involved.""

Daniel swallowed.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""

He looked at me again.

"Your mother contacted me six months ago. She wanted to know how much of the Hale family business you controlled.""

I stared at him.

"Why would she ask you that?""

"Because she said you were entitled to part of your father's estate.""

My father, Robert Bennett, had died when I was twenty-six.

He had been a successful investment banker, but he had never lived like a wealthy man. He preferred old cars, modest vacations, and quiet Sunday dinners.

When he died, I inherited several investments and a trust.

My mother had handled the paperwork.

I'd never questioned her.

Daniel continued.

"She told me the trust was worth considerably more than you believed. She also said your father had left instructions that the assets would eventually become part of your children's inheritance.""

I looked at Grayson.

He was staring at me.

Neither of us had ever discussed that possibility.

"How much?"" I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"According to the documents I saw, approximately forty-eight million dollars.""

The number sounded absurd.

My father had left me money, yes. But forty-eight million?

Impossible.

Or so I'd thought.

Vanessa began crying again.

"Daniel, please. You don't understand what happened.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"I understand perfectly. You wanted me to sign a statement claiming I was only helping you because I was emotionally involved. You wanted me to pretend the money was compensation for an affair.""

Grayson went completely still.

"An affair?""

Daniel looked at his brother.

"She approached me before she approached you.""

Vanessa covered her stomach.

"That's not true!""

Daniel continued.

"She told me she was pregnant and needed money. Then she told me Grayson was the father. When I refused to cooperate, she threatened to tell everyone I'd been sleeping with her.""

Grayson released a breath.

"Did you?""

"No.""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I swear to you, Grayson. I never touched her.""

I studied Vanessa.

Her tears had stopped.

Her eyes moved from Daniel to the envelope, then toward the ballroom doors.

She was calculating.

That frightened me more than her shouting.

I approached her.

"Why did my mother sign this?""

Vanessa looked away.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I stepped closer.

"Don't lie to me. Not about my mother.""

She suddenly raised her voice.

"Your mother was trying to protect you!""

"From what?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I looked at the screen.

Claire, this is Martin Reeves, your father's former attorney. I have been trying to reach you. Your mother has been accessing your inheritance without authorization.

A second message arrived.

And there's something else you need to know. Your father's original will names someone you would never expect.

I looked up.

My mother was standing near the ballroom entrance.

May you like

She had just arrived.

And she was smiling.
