Chapter 7: The Night in Miami
"Claire, there's something I never told you about that night.""
Grayson's voice was barely recognizable.
I stared at him across the conference table.
"Then tell me now.""
He looked toward Martin, then Daniel, and finally at my mother.
"On March 14, I was in Miami for a private meeting with several investors. Vanessa was there, but I never arranged to meet her.""
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"That's not true.""
Grayson turned toward her.
"Don't interrupt me.""
He continued.
"At approximately ten thirty, I received a message from an unknown number. It said someone had information about Claire's inheritance and wanted to meet privately.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did you do?""
"I went to the hotel conference lounge. A woman was waiting for me. She introduced herself as an assistant working for your mother's accounting firm.""
Margaret looked away.
Grayson noticed.
"She handed me a folder containing copies of your father's financial records. She said the original documents had been stolen and that someone was preparing to transfer the remaining trust assets.""
"Why didn't you call me?""
"Because the folder contained information about your mother's involvement. I didn't want to accuse her without evidence.""
I looked at Martin.
"Was that true?""
He nodded slowly.
"Some of the information in those documents was authentic.""
Grayson continued.
"The woman told me to meet her again at midnight. I arrived at the address she provided, but nobody was there. Instead, I found Vanessa waiting outside my hotel suite.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Because you invited me.""
"I did not.""
"You opened the door.""
"Because you claimed you had information about Claire.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"He was alone with me.""
Grayson slammed his palm against the table.
"For seven minutes! You handed me a document, asked me to sign something, and left when I refused.""
I looked at him.
"What document?""
Grayson reached into his jacket and removed a photograph of a folded paper.
"I kept this because I thought it was strange.""
Martin took it.
His eyes narrowed.
It was a declaration stating that Grayson acknowledged financial responsibility for an unborn child.
The signature line was blank.
But beneath it was a paragraph identifying the alleged father.
Grayson Hale.
I felt my knees weaken.
"Why would you keep this and never tell me?""
"Because I didn't know Vanessa was pregnant. I thought it was some kind of extortion attempt.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"You knew exactly what it was.""
"No. I knew someone was trying to trap me.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who sent the message?""
Grayson checked his phone.
"The number was disconnected the next morning.""
Martin examined the photograph.
"There's something unusual about this document.""
He pointed to the bottom corner.
A small reference number had been printed beside the date.
"Where did you get this?"" he asked.
Grayson frowned.
"Vanessa handed it to me.""
Martin shook his head.
"This is not a medical or legal document. It's a draft generated by a private fertility coordination service.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
Martin continued.
"The reference number belongs to a patient file.""
He looked at her.
"Vanessa, did you receive fertility treatment?""
She said nothing.
Daniel stared at her.
"You told me the pregnancy was unexpected.""
"It was.""
"Then why was there a fertility coordination file?""
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
"I didn't ask for any of this!""
My mother stood.
"That's enough. We are leaving.""
I blocked her path.
"No.""
"Claire, move.""
"You don't get to walk away every time someone asks you a question.""
Margaret's eyes hardened.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked at Grayson.
"Your husband has been lying to you about Miami.""
Grayson stepped forward.
"Then tell her what happened.""
My mother smiled faintly.
"Ask him why he was meeting a woman from a fertility clinic in the first place.""
I turned toward my husband.
"Grayson?""
He shook his head.
"I never met anyone from a fertility clinic.""
Martin was still examining the document.
Suddenly, he looked up.
"Wait.""
He enlarged the reference number on his tablet.
Then he opened another file.
His expression changed completely.
"Claire, this patient file was created under a different name.""
"Whose?""
Martin hesitated.
Then he turned the screen toward me.
The name appeared clearly.
MARGARET BENNETT.
My mother had been registered as the original patient.
And the appointment date was March 14.
But beneath her name was another entry.
Embryo transfer authorization — donor details attached.
Grayson stared at the screen.
Daniel whispered, "What the hell?""
I looked at my mother.
"Why were you at a fertility clinic?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Instead, she reached for her purse.
And for the first time that night, she looked like a woman who knew she had lost control.
Then Martin opened the attached donor record.
May you like
His face turned pale.
"Claire," he whispered, "you need to see who authorized this.""
