Chapter 1: The Woman Who Wanted My Marriage

The night my husband's pregnant ex-girlfriend announced she was carrying his child in front of six hundred people, everyone expected me to collapse.

Instead, I smiled.

Because I had spent the previous three weeks discovering that the woman standing on that stage wasn't the only person who had been lying to me.

My name is Claire Hale. I'd been married to Grayson Hale for seven years, and until that evening, I'd believed our marriage was one of the few things in my life money couldn't destroy.

Grayson was a billionaire real estate developer whose company had recently secured a contract to build a luxury waterfront district in Manhattan. His name appeared in business magazines, his face appeared on television, and politicians returned his phone calls.

I was the woman beside him.

The quiet wife who attended charity dinners, remembered birthdays, and knew exactly how he liked his coffee.

We had no children, although we'd discussed starting a family more than once.

That night, the St. Regis ballroom was filled with investors, celebrities, politicians, and executives celebrating Grayson's biggest professional achievement.

Six hundred guests.

Crystal chandeliers.

Champagne towers.

A livestream broadcasting the entire event.

I wore a black satin gown and the diamond necklace Grayson had given me on our fifth anniversary.

He leaned toward me before stepping onto the stage.

"Claire, are you comfortable?"" he asked.

I smiled.

"You mean because your mother-in-law is sitting at the same table as your investors?""

He laughed.

"Your mother promised to behave.""

"Your brother promised the same thing at Thanksgiving.""

Grayson shook his head.

"Daniel is incapable of behaving.""

His younger brother had arrived late, looking unusually nervous. He'd barely spoken to anyone and kept checking his phone.

I noticed, but I didn't ask.

Not yet.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A woman in a white silk dress walked inside.

Vanessa Monroe.

Grayson's ex-girlfriend.

I'd met her twice before. Both encounters had been unpleasant, although she'd always managed to disguise her hostility beneath a perfectly rehearsed smile.

She was visibly pregnant.

And she was walking directly toward the stage.

I touched Grayson's arm.

"Why is Vanessa here?""

His expression changed.

"Claire, I don't know.""

Before he could move, Vanessa climbed the stage steps and took the microphone from the event host.

"Good evening, everyone!""

The music stopped.

Grayson turned toward her.

"Vanessa, what are you doing?""

She placed one hand over her stomach.

"After months of being ignored, I think it's time everyone heard the truth.""

My champagne glass suddenly felt cold in my hand.

Vanessa looked directly at Grayson.

"I'm carrying your baby.""

The silence lasted perhaps two seconds.

Then the whispers started.

A woman at the next table covered her mouth.

One of Grayson's investors slowly lowered his champagne glass.

Someone behind me whispered, "Oh, my God. His wife is right there.""

Vanessa continued.

"Grayson promised me he'd take responsibility. But apparently, his marriage and his reputation are more important than his own child.""

Grayson stepped toward the stage.

"Vanessa, stop.""

She shook her head dramatically.

"No. I'm finished protecting you.""

Then she pointed at me.

"Claire, I'm sorry. But your perfect marriage was never what you thought it was.""

Six hundred faces turned in my direction.

I could feel the cameras finding me.

And then I remembered the photograph.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had sent it to my personal email.

A platinum watch beside a lipstick-stained champagne glass.

The hotel room was unmistakably expensive.

The watch was unmistakably Grayson's.

Her message had been short.

He still comes back to me.

I had confronted my husband that evening.

He admitted Vanessa had approached him during a business conference in Miami. He insisted they'd never been intimate.

But he couldn't explain why she had a photograph of his watch in a hotel room.

For one terrible night, I questioned everything.

Then I noticed something.

The photograph had been cropped.

And the original filename contained the words:

MIAMI_CAMPAIGN_FINAL_08.

I contacted the hotel's publicity department.

Two days later, they sent me the original image.

That photograph changed everything.

Now, standing in front of six hundred guests, I placed my champagne glass on the table and slowly stood.

Vanessa smiled.

She thought she had won.

I walked toward the stage.

"Vanessa," I said calmly, "before my husband answers your accusation, perhaps you can explain something.""

Her smile tightened.

"What?""

"The photograph you sent me three weeks ago.""

She blinked.

"What photograph?""

"The one you claimed proved my husband spent the night with you.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Claire, don't embarrass yourself.""

I looked toward the event technician.

"Please prepare the original image.""

The enormous screen behind her went black.

Then a photograph appeared.

Vanessa's photograph.

And beside it, the uncropped original.

The ballroom fell silent.

Because suddenly, everyone could see the photographers, the lighting equipment, and the people standing behind the supposed hotel-room scene.

But that wasn't the most interesting detail.

It was the woman holding the champagne glass.

She wasn't Vanessa.

She was a hired model.

And in the original photograph, she was standing beside a conference publicity display.

Vanessa's face lost its color.

Grayson stared at the screen.

Then he turned toward her.

"Vanessa," he said quietly, "what exactly have you been doing?""

She dropped the microphone.

But before she could answer, a voice came from the back of the ballroom.

"That's not the only thing she lied about.""

I turned.

Daniel Hale was standing near the entrance.

And he was holding a sealed envelope.
