Chapter 14: The Final Family Dinner

Richard Hale arrived twenty minutes later.

He walked into the library wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a silver-topped cane.

He looked older than the photographs I'd seen, but there was nothing fragile about him.

His eyes moved across the room.

First Eleanor.

Then Peter.

Finally, me.

"Claire Bennett," he said.

I folded my arms.

"Mr. Hale.""

He smiled.

"Please. We're practically family.""

"That's exactly what I'm beginning to regret.""

Richard chuckled.

"Robert always did raise a sharp daughter.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Don't speak about Robert.""

Richard turned toward her.

"You're looking well.""

"Unlike your conscience.""

He ignored her and placed a leather folder on the table.

"Let's end this nonsense.""

I didn't move.

"What do you want?""

"Your signature.""

He opened the folder.

Inside was a transfer agreement assigning my remaining inheritance rights to Northbridge Holdings.

"Sign this, and everyone walks away.""

I laughed.

"You stole my inheritance, forged my signature, concealed my father's survival, and helped manufacture a pregnancy scandal. And now you want another signature?""

Richard adjusted his cufflinks.

"I want to prevent unnecessary damage.""

Peter stepped forward.

"The authorities already have copies of the financial records.""

Richard turned toward him.

"Do they?""

Peter nodded.

"Every transaction. Every forged authorization. Every payment to Vanessa.""

Richard looked disappointed.

"Peter, I gave you a career.""

"You gave me threats.""

"And I can take everything away.""

Eleanor struck the floor with her cane.

"Richard, it's over.""

He turned toward her.

"You should be resting.""

"I spent four years resting because of you.""

Richard sighed.

"You were unstable, Eleanor. I did what was necessary.""

"Necessary for whom?""

He didn't answer.

I took the transfer agreement and read it.

There was a clause at the bottom stating that all disputed assets would become the property of Northbridge Holdings upon my signature.

But another paragraph caught my attention.

It transferred the ownership of the remaining shares to a person identified as the principal beneficiary.

I read the name.

Vanessa Monroe.

I looked up.

"You're giving Vanessa control of the company?""

Richard smiled.

"She's my daughter.""

"Your daughter who publicly accused your son of fathering her child?""

"She did what she was instructed to do.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"You used your own daughter as a weapon.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"She was always more useful than Grayson.""

I felt sick.

"Why did you want to destroy my marriage?""

Richard walked around the table.

"Because your father made a mistake. He placed too much money in your hands. You married Grayson, and suddenly the Bennett trust became connected to my company.""

"So you wanted me divorced.""

"I wanted the assets separated.""

"And Vanessa's pregnancy?""

"An unfortunate complication.""

Eleanor stared at him.

"Don't pretend you care about that baby.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"The child is entitled to what belongs to the family.""

I looked at him.

"The child isn't responsible for your crimes.""

For the first time, Richard appeared irritated.

"You're young, Claire. You think money is about fairness. It isn't. It's about control.""

I stepped closer.

"Then you've spent your entire life being controlled by the wrong thing.""

He smiled coldly.

"Sign the agreement.""

"No.""

His expression changed.

"Think carefully.""

"I have.""

He closed the folder.

"Then perhaps you should know that your husband has already signed a separate agreement.""

My heart skipped.

"What agreement?""

Richard removed another document.

It was dated three weeks earlier.

Grayson Hale's signature appeared at the bottom.

The document stated that Grayson would voluntarily relinquish his voting rights in Hale Development in exchange for a settlement protecting Claire's inheritance.

I stared at it.

"Did Grayson sign this?""

Richard nodded.

"Of course.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She shook her head.

"That signature is not authentic.""

Richard laughed.

"Your husband has been signing documents for years without reading them.""

Then my phone rang.

Grayson.

I answered.

"Claire, where are you?""

"At the estate.""

His voice changed.

"Get out of there.""

"Why?""

"Because I just discovered something. Peter's records were altered. The signature on the transfer agreement isn't mine.""

Richard reached for my phone.

I stepped away.

Grayson continued.

"Claire, listen carefully. I found the original company records. Northbridge was never owned by my father.""

I stared at Richard.

"Who owned it?""

"Margaret.""

My mother froze.

Grayson continued.

"And there's another problem. Your mother transferred the company to a new owner yesterday.""

"Who?""

A long pause.

Then Grayson answered.

"Daniel.""

I looked at the library door.

My brother-in-law was standing there.

He had a folder in his hand.

Richard turned toward him.

"Daniel. You're late.""

Daniel looked at his father.

Then at me.

"Sorry. I had to make sure the police were following the right vehicle.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

Two officers entered the library.

Behind them was a woman carrying a laptop.

Martin Reeves.

And my father.

Robert Bennett.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

My father had left the rehabilitation facility.

He stood beside Martin, supported by a walking frame.

Richard took a step backward.

"Robert.""

My father looked directly at him.

"Hello, Richard.""

For the first time, the powerful billionaire looked frightened.

Martin opened his briefcase.

"Richard Hale, we have evidence of fraud, identity theft, financial conspiracy, and the falsification of medical records.""

Richard laughed.

"You have nothing.""

Daniel placed his folder on the table.

"Actually, we have everything.""

He turned toward me.

"Claire, I need you to see something before they arrest him.""

Inside the folder were bank records, company ownership documents, and a notarized statement.

But the final page was a letter.

Signed by my mother.

Margaret Bennett.

It contained a full confession.

She had admitted arranging the fraudulent transfers, forging the trust amendments, and financing Vanessa's public accusation.

I looked at her.

"Why?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I thought I could fix everything.""

"You had seven years.""

"I know.""

She lowered her head.

Then she whispered something that made my father close his eyes.

"Richard didn't start this plan. I did.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Your father discovered the first theft before you married Grayson. I was the one who arranged the accident.""

My father's face crumpled.

Richard suddenly shouted.

"Shut up!""

But my mother continued.

"I paid the driver. Richard helped cover it up. And when I thought Robert had died, I believed I could finally control everything.""

The officers moved toward her.

My mother looked at me one last time.

"I'm sorry, Claire.""

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I stepped backward.

Because I finally understood that the woman I'd spent my entire life trying to please had been willing to destroy everyone around her to get what she wanted.

Then Richard made one final mistake.

He turned toward the officers and said:

"You cannot arrest me. The person who ordered the original accident is standing right there.""

Everyone looked at my father.

Robert slowly raised his head.

May you like

"Yes," he said.

"And I brought the recording.""
