Chapter 6: Someone Was Signing My Name

I had always believed that the worst betrayal came from someone who hated you.

I was beginning to understand that the most dangerous betrayal came from someone who knew exactly how you signed your name.

The ballroom was almost empty now.

Guests had been quietly escorted toward the hotel lobby. The livestream had been interrupted, although I knew the footage would be everywhere by morning.

Grayson stood beside me with his phone pressed to his ear.

"Peter, freeze every Northbridge transaction. Immediately.""

"Already done.""

"Change the account permissions. Nobody gets access without my approval.""

Peter hesitated.

"There's one issue.""

Grayson closed his eyes.

"What now?""

"The person who authorized the payments has administrator-level access to the account.""

"Who?""

"Your wife.""

I shook my head.

"Peter, I've never accessed that account.""

"I believe you, Claire. But the system shows your credentials were used.""

Grayson ended the call.

Then he turned toward me.

"I believe you.""

I wanted to thank him.

But the words wouldn't come.

Because somebody had deliberately used my identity to steal money, and the evidence pointed directly toward me.

Martin opened his briefcase again.

"Claire, I need to see your identification and the original trust documents.""

I handed him my driver's license.

He compared it with a printed authorization form.

Then he frowned.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"The signature is convincing, but the digital certificate was issued using an older identity verification record.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means whoever did this had access to your original identity documents.""

My mother suddenly stood up.

"That's enough. You're all making wild accusations.""

Martin turned toward her.

"Margaret, the authorization records were generated from an office network registered to your accounting firm.""

She said nothing.

Daniel looked at her.

"You used Claire's identity?""

My mother snapped.

"I managed her affairs for years. I had access to everything.""

"That doesn't give you permission to steal.""

Margaret pointed at me.

"Everything I did was for this family.""

I stared at her.

"Which family?""

She looked genuinely offended.

"Don't speak to me like that.""

"You used my signature to send money to Vanessa. You tried to convince everyone my husband was the father of her baby. And you stole money my father left me.""

My mother raised her voice.

"Your father was going to destroy us!""

"Who is us?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Grayson.

"Ask him what his father promised me.""

Grayson stepped forward.

"My father is dead. Whatever agreement you had with him ended when he died.""

Margaret laughed.

"That's what you think.""

She reached into her purse and removed a small black USB drive.

"I have the original agreement.""

Martin immediately stiffened.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your client gave it to me.""

"Robert?""

Margaret nodded.

"Before he died.""

She placed the drive on the table.

"Your father promised me twenty percent of the Hale family's development profits in exchange for keeping the Bennett trust under control.""

Grayson stared at her.

"That's impossible.""

"Your father was a very practical man.""

"Show me the agreement.""

Margaret held the drive between two fingers.

"Not until I know what happens to me.""

Martin folded his arms.

"You're negotiating with evidence of potential financial crimes in front of witnesses.""

Margaret ignored him.

"Claire, I want you to listen carefully. Your father was not the man you remember. He was obsessed with money, and he was terrified that Grayson would take control of everything.""

I shook my head.

"My father trusted Grayson.""

"Your father trusted nobody.""

"Then why did he appoint him?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Because he knew Grayson was the only person who could protect you from me.""

The words hung in the air.

Even Margaret seemed surprised she'd said them.

Martin reached for the USB drive.

She pulled it away.

"Not so fast.""

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Margaret, you promised me this would be over tonight.""

My mother turned sharply.

"Be quiet.""

"You said Grayson would admit the baby was his. You said Claire would leave him. You said I'd get the money.""

Grayson stepped toward her.

"Who promised you five million?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Your mother.""

Margaret's expression turned vicious.

"You ungrateful little liar.""

Vanessa began crying again.

"You told me the pregnancy would be enough to force him into a settlement.""

I stared at her.

"Enough. I want the truth. Is Grayson the father?""

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, she whispered:

"I don't know.""

Grayson gave a bitter laugh.

"You don't know?""

"I was told the timing would make it impossible to question.""

"Who told you?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Margaret.""

My mother grabbed her arm.

"Stop talking!""

Daniel pulled Vanessa away.

"Don't touch her.""

Vanessa stumbled backward and nearly fell against a chair.

Martin took out his phone.

"I think we need to contact the authorities.""

Margaret suddenly became very calm.

"Before you do that, Claire, you should know something about the money.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at Grayson.

"Your husband wasn't the only person receiving payments from Northbridge.""

Grayson frowned.

"Who else?""

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Someone inside your company has been receiving money every month.""

Martin opened another document.

He scanned the account details.

Then his expression changed.

"Grayson...""

"What?""

"The payments weren't going to an outside employee.""

He turned the paper around.

The recipient's name was clearly printed.

DANIEL HALE.

Daniel stepped backward.

"What?""

Grayson stared at his younger brother.

"Daniel, what the hell is this?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I've never received money from Northbridge.""

Margaret folded her arms.

"Perhaps you should check your private account.""

Daniel pulled out his phone.

His fingers moved quickly.

Then he stopped.

His face went white.

"There's a transfer," he whispered.

Grayson grabbed the phone.

The amount was $250,000.

The description read:

FINAL PAYMENT — PATERNITY AGREEMENT.

Daniel looked at his brother.

"I swear I didn't know.""

But before Grayson could respond, Martin examined the transaction date.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, this payment was made three days after Vanessa's first prenatal appointment.""

I stared at the screen.

The account had been opened under Daniel's name.

But the authorization carried my digital signature.

And beneath it was a second approval.

Grayson Hale.

My husband looked at the document for a long moment.

Then he whispered:

"Someone has been using both our identities.""

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from an unknown sender.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence and an attachment.

If you want to know who really arranged Vanessa's pregnancy, ask Grayson what happened in Miami on March 14.

I looked at my husband.

He was staring at the same date.

May you like

And suddenly, he looked more frightened than I'd ever seen him.

"Claire," he whispered, "there's something I never told you about that night.""
