Chapter 11: My Husband's Signature on My Father's Medical File
The drive to Boston took four hours.
I didn't speak for the first two.
Grayson sat beside me in the back of the car, answering calls from his company's legal department and repeatedly checking his phone.
Daniel followed in another vehicle with Martin.
My mother had been left at the hotel under the supervision of her attorney.
I hadn't wanted her near me.
Not after everything she'd admitted.
But the photograph on my phone wouldn't leave my mind.
My husband's name.
My father's medical file.
Seven years ago.
I finally turned toward Grayson.
"Why were you listed as my father's emergency contact?""
He stopped typing.
"Where did you get that?""
"Answer me.""
He looked out the window.
"Because your father asked me to.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"When?""
"Three weeks before the accident.""
"What accident?""
Grayson rubbed his forehead.
"Claire, I was going to tell you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's what everyone says when they've been hiding something.""
He put his phone away.
"Your father contacted me shortly before we got married. He told me he was investigating financial misconduct involving Margaret and my father.""
"And?""
"He said he had discovered something dangerous. He wanted me to help protect you.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"He said he didn't want you involved until he had proof.""
"What happened?""
Grayson took a long breath.
"One night, I received a call from Richard. He said Robert had been involved in an accident and needed medical attention. He asked me to come to a private hospital.""
My fingers curled around my handbag.
"What did you see?""
"Your father was unconscious. He had serious injuries. Richard told me the doctors didn't expect him to recover.""
"And you believed him?""
"I was twenty-nine. I didn't know what else to think.""
"Did you see his medical records?""
"No.""
"Did you see a death certificate?""
Grayson hesitated.
"No.""
I turned away.
For seven years, I had believed my husband had been completely honest about his family.
Now I was discovering that he had been involved in the most painful secret of my life.
He reached for my hand.
I moved it away.
"Claire, I swear I didn't know he was alive.""
"Then why did you sign the emergency contact form?""
"Because Richard said the hospital needed someone who could make decisions if Margaret wasn't available.""
I looked at him.
"Was my mother there?""
"No.""
"Then who was?""
Grayson looked down.
"Vanessa.""
I turned sharply.
"What?""
"She was working as a personal assistant for Richard's private investment office at the time.""
My mouth went dry.
"Vanessa knew my father?""
"Yes.""
The car seemed suddenly too small.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't think it mattered.""
I stared at him.
"She has been involved in my family's life for seven years, Grayson. She sent me photographs, fabricated an affair, and publicly accused you of fathering her child. And now you're telling me she was present when my father was hospitalized?""
He didn't answer.
I looked out the window.
The city lights were beginning to appear in the distance.
When we arrived at the rehabilitation facility, Martin was waiting outside.
He had already spoken with the administrator.
"Claire," he said, "the patient is stable. But there's something you should understand.""
"What?""
"He has been receiving treatment for a traumatic brain injury. His recovery has been gradual.""
I swallowed.
"Can he speak?""
"According to the attending physician, yes. His memory is also improving.""
"Then I want to see him.""
Martin nodded.
We entered a quiet corridor with pale walls and soft lighting.
A nurse led us to a private room.
The door opened.
And there he was.
My father.
His hair was almost completely white. His face was thinner, and one side of his body appeared weaker.
But it was him.
The same hands.
The same eyes.
The same small scar above his left eyebrow from when he'd fallen off his bicycle as a teenager.
I stopped breathing.
"Dad?""
He slowly turned his head.
For several seconds, he simply stared at me.
Then his eyes filled with tears.
"Claire?""
I covered my mouth.
I wanted to run toward him.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to ask why he had abandoned me for seven years.
Instead, I walked to his bedside and took his hand.
"Dad, I've missed you.""
He squeezed my fingers.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
I began crying.
Grayson remained near the doorway.
My father noticed him.
His expression immediately changed.
"Grayson?""
"Yes, sir.""
My father tried to sit up.
The nurse gently helped him.
Then he looked at me.
"Claire, you shouldn't have brought him here.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
My father looked toward Grayson.
"Because he's the reason I couldn't come home.""
The room went completely silent.
Grayson stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, that's not true.""
My father shook his head.
"Don't lie to her.""
I looked between them.
"Dad, what are you talking about?""
He gripped my hand.
"Seven years ago, Richard told me you were in danger. He said someone had been watching you. He said the only way to protect you was to disappear.""
I felt cold.
"Who was watching me?""
My father looked directly at Grayson.
"Someone who knew about the trust.""
Grayson shook his head.
"Sir, I was trying to protect Claire.""
My father closed his eyes.
"That's what you told Richard.""
I stood up.
"What did Grayson do?""
My father looked at me with unbearable sadness.
"He signed the document that made my disappearance permanent.""
Grayson went pale.
"That's not what happened.""
My father continued.
"He signed an agreement transferring control of the medical records, the trust accounts, and the company shares.""
I turned toward my husband.
"Is that true?""
Grayson said nothing.
Then my father whispered:
"Claire, there's something else. The accident wasn't an accident.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Who caused it?""
My father looked toward the window.
"Richard Hale.""
But before I could respond, the nurse entered with a folder.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry. There's been a request to transfer you to another facility.""
My father grabbed my wrist.
"No.""
The nurse looked confused.
"The transfer was authorized this morning.""
"By whom?"" Martin demanded.
She checked the form.
Then she answered.
"By Mr. Grayson Hale.""
I turned toward my husband.
He looked genuinely shocked.
"I didn't authorize that.""
Martin took the paperwork.
Then he pointed to the electronic authorization.
The signature was unmistakable.
It was Grayson's.

And beneath it was a note.
Patient to be transferred before family access is restored.
